Question Search ends for missing sailor

Search ends for missing sailor
By: Navy Times Staff - 7-20-19
RE: https://www.navytimes.com/news/your-...issing-sailor/

The U.S. Navy has stopped searching for the sailor believed to have toppled off an aircraft carrier into the Arabian Sea on Wednesday morning.

In a prepared statement sent to Navy Times, the U.S. 5th Fleet in Bahrain said officials had called off all rescue efforts after “extensive efforts to locate the sailor” by the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, the guided-missile cruiser Leyte Gulf, Patrol Squadrons 10 and 40 and the Spanish guided-missile frigate Méndez Núñez failed.

The sailor served in Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5, the Norfolk-based World Famous Nightdippers.

Navy Times is withholding the name of the sailor until 72 hours after next of kin notification, in keeping with the longstanding policy of the sea service.

The sailor remains listed as Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and shipmates of our lost sailor,” said Vice Adm. Jim Malloy, the commander of the U.S. 5th Fleet.

“During this tragic time, I want to thank the Spanish Álvaro de Bazán-class frigate Méndez Núñez for their assistance in the search operations, and all the sailors involved in the search for their valiant efforts to find our shipmate.”

Officials at 5th Fleet added that a previous statement from the command was incorrect.

Although Pakistan offered to assist efforts to find the missing sailor, Islamabad’s guided-missile frigate Aslat did not join the search.

Navy identifies missing sailor who reportedly went overboard from the USS Abraham Lincoln

RE: https://taskandpurpose.com/missing-l...tified-saldana

UPDATE!

The Navy has identified the missing sailor from the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln as Aviation Electronics Technician 2nd Class Slayton Saldana, who was assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5, with Carrier Air Wing 7.

Photo on site only.

Saldana has been listed as Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown since July 17. He was reported overboard while the Lincoln was in the Arabian Sea. Search and rescue efforts ended on July 19.

Navy officials have not yet released any information about how Saldana went overboard.

His fiancé Lexi Posey posted on Facebook on Monday that the day marked the couple's 38-month anniversary.

They had planned to get married in April.

"Since I'm traveling back to the States and 'traveling back in time' due to time zones, today, our anniversary, will be a very long day," Posey wrote in a message to Saldana. "But I wish I could travel back in time to the start of our relationship over 3 years ago and constantly reassure you how much I have loved you and appreciate all the little things that you did for me."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our respect to his family and girl-friend Lexi - we are sorry about your loss and we send our respects to all.

Navy Identifies Sailor Reported Overboard On USS Abraham Lincoln

Aviation Electronics Technician 2nd Class Slayton Saldana has been listed as DUSTWUN following the July 17 incident. Navy photo.

The Navy announced that Aviation Electronics Technician 2nd Class Slayton Saldana was the sailor listed as Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown (DUSTWUN) following a July 17 reported man overboard incident on carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72).

Saldana is assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 5, which is part of Carrier Air Wing 7 deployed with the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group. Saldana is believed to have gone overboard while Lincoln was operating in the Arabian Sea, according to a news release from U.S. 5th Fleet.

Saldana, from Virginia, enlisted in the Navy on April 28, 2015. He had served with HSC 5 since July 7, 2018, and was promoted to E-5 earlier this year. Previously, he served aboard USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7), according to biographical information released by the Navy.

Guided-missile cruiser USS Leyte Gulf (CG-55), Patrol Squadron (VP) 10, Patrol Squadron (VP) 40 and Spanish Álvaro de Bazán-class frigate ESPS Méndez Núñez – all members of the Lincoln Carrier Strike Group – ended their search for Saldana on July 19.

Lincoln deployed from Naval Station Norfolk, Va., in April, after completing its mid-life refueling at Newport News Shipbuilding. Lincoln has been operating in the U.S. Central Command since May, when tensions between the U.S. and Iran heated up.

Lincoln is in the midst of an around-the-world deployment as it changes homeports from Norfolk to San Diego in what is a three-carrier homeport swap. The Navy is sending Lincoln to San Diego. The Navy sent USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) to Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton, Wash., and USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74) to Norfolk.
