Post Went and March in the Parade

Just got back from marching (walking) in the Veterans Day Parade. As a vet from the Vietnam era it was good to hear the Thank yous and the applause. Something we never got when we got out in the 60's and 70's.

I Salute you all. Thank you!

Keith

P.S. James it is good to see ya posting.

Here is to every guy or gal - that knows how to use a mosquito net with a air mattress and sleeping bag, can open any c-rations with a P38, quit wearing a poncho after a while, took all the cigarettes out of the rations and caught hell from the rest of the squad, could sleep on the hood of deuce and a half(moving), cooled some beer with a co2 fire extiguisher that was needed later to put out a fire. Would drink anything that would run down hill and give you a buzz, thought he was a foriegn language expert untill you got lost and needed one, new the difference between R&R and I&I. Told every new boot they were his replacement. Griped about food, water, ammo, rotation formula, and payday.
I left out a lot, but you get the drift, this person was you and me and all of our brothers that would lay down their life , or did.

Veterans day is never a happy day for me. I remember too many young lives that were cut short.. Too many times I see happy young couples with children and think of the men I knew who never got a chance to have a wife or kids. Now that I'm getting old and long in the tooth, I remember the friends I once had. In my memory they are always young, and sorely missed.

Hard for me too. Hard to see the world celebrating, while I am feeling such loss. It is good to be here with you, and to know we are not alone.

Default Veterans Day

We got back from Seattle Saturday night at midnight. We got up early and went to my father-in-law's little Bretheren Church in the hills of Western North Carolina. After the service the children of the church got all the veterans and pinned a carnation on them and then we had a surprise dinner in the fellowship hall. They made the vets eat first and sit at a special table. After a tremendous meal, the kids got up and had a presentation to each vet. They read a little of the war record of each vet and gave us each a certificate. One chair was empty, in it was a bouquet of roses. It was for the ones that were killed in war. Some of the vets made small speeches but I didn't. I just kept looking at the roses. That is where the real heroes are. After it was over, all the kids came and hugged all the vets.
