My Rev War regiment has a real 18th century 3" diameter barrel trench mortar. One day, after our annual Colonial Faire and Muster of Fifes & Drums, we decided to have some fun with it. We first put about 80 grains of 3F powder down the barrel and stuffed a newpaper wrapped corn cob down and let fly. It was great!...so naturally, we started using heavier loads. We got it up to 150 grains with the last one...that sent the corn cob over the tree line onto MA Rt.20! We all stood frozen to the spot waiting for the sounds of a multiple car crash which, fortunately, never happened. With that, we put it away for another year.

I could just picture the incident investigation:

Driver: Honest to God, officer! This damned corn cob came out of nowhere and smashed into my windshield!

Officer: Don't be silly! It would take a mortar to do something like that! Have you been drinking, sir?

With a little punch. Ordered 100 ft of cannon fuse last night. Been working on a carriage design, haven't made up my mind on that yet. I have figured how to integrate a 2"ball hitch so I can tow it with the ATV.
