MATTAPOISETT — Lt. Colonel Mary M. Clarke, U.S. Air Force Retired, 85, of Mattapoisett, formerly of New Bedford died Saturday December 11, 2010 at home.


Born in New Bedford, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Eva (Duffy) Clarke. She was a graduate of Holy Family High School, St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing, and UMass Dartmouth.


Lt. Colonel Clarke had a long and distinguished career as an Air Force nurse. She served at various Air Force Base hospitals throughout the United States, in France, and on Okinawa. She had also been assigned as Chief Nurse in the Casualty Staging Unit at DaNang Air Force Base in Vietnam from 1968-1969. She retired from the Air Force in 1977 after 26 years of service.

She had been awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Outstanding Unit Award, the Vietnam Service Medal with four campaign stars, the Longevity Service Award with Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device.


After retiring from the Air Force, she returned to New Bedford to be with her family. Her greatest joy was the time spent with her niece Paula McGraw, her husband Mark, and their quadruplets, Andrew, Patrick, Michael, and Kate McGraw. Mary had resided with them in Mattapoisett for the past three years.


She was a communicant of St. Lawrence Church.


She was a member of the Retired Officers Association, the Retired Air Force Nurses Association, and the Disabled American Veterans Dr. C.E. Burt Chapter 7.


She is survived by two sisters, Catherine Patricia Kerr of Pawtucket, RI, and Harriet E. Servais and her husband Paul of New Bedford; and many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.


She was the sister of the late Theresa T. Murphy.


Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11:30 AM at St. Lawrence Church. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Monday from 3-7 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
