Mattis says over 3,000 additional U.S. troops will deploy to Afghanistan

RE: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/mattis-...o-afghanistan/

Defense Secretary James Mattis said that over 3,000 additional U.S. troops will deploy to Afghanistan. He made the revelation during an impromptu news conference with reporters at the Pentagon Monday.

Mattis had disclosed at the end of last month that he had signed the order to send additional forces, and they would be moving over the next few days, but at the time did not say how many troops would be going. About half the troops will come from the 82nd Airborne.

In August, President Trump announced what he called a "conditions-based approach" to evaluating troop levels or further military operations in Afghanistan, as opposed to an approach based on "arbitrary timetables."

Asked about recent military accidents that have resulted in the deaths or injuries of over 50 troops since June, Mattis told reporters, "After we find the specifics (as to what caused each accident)," we will see "what are the circumstances surrounding those issues."

But as for whether the accidents are a result of sequestration cuts, he responded, "I'm not willing to say there is a direct line between sequestration and what happened."

Mattis also touched on North Korea when a reporter asked him whether there were any military options that would not put Seoul at grave risk. Yes, he said, "There are." He did not expand on that answer, however.

Arrow Israel News: U.S. Opens First Permanent Military Base in Israel

U.S. Opens First Permanent Military Base in Israel

RE: http://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/1.813061

Air defense base is located within Israel Air Force base in the Negev

- What we know so far about Israel's alleged strike in Syria
- Israel: Syrian missile was seen as ballistic threat, we didn't hesitate to shoot it down
- Analysis Israel’s new missile defense system is a clear message to Iran, but it isn’t perfect

The first permanent U.S. military base in Israel was dedicated on Monday.
A few dozen American soldiers will live and work on the base, situated inside the school of the Aerial Defense Division of the Israel Air Force, in the Negev. High-ranking U.S. officers attended the dedication ceremony.

Brig. Gen. Zvi Haimovich, the commander of the division, said the new base reflects the close military cooperation between Israel and the United States. He declined to elaborate on the exact activities of the American soldiers, but said, “The base is here to stay. It involved a significant allocation of resources, in the understanding that this was right and necessary and part of the United States’ assets in Israel.”

He was evidently referring to the U.S. soldiers who have been operating the X-Band radar system that the United States deployed in the Negev in 2009. The powerful system, which can detect missile launches from a distance of hundreds of kilometers away, was part of U.S. efforts to improve Israel’s defensive capabilities in the face of the growing threat from Iran.

Last week the Aerial Defense Division opened an additional Iron Dome anti-missile battalion. During the 2014 war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Israel deployed 10 Iron Dome batteries to intercept Hamas rockets, but this was an emergency deployment that required calling up reserve troops. Usually, a smaller number of batteries are operational at any given time.

The IDF plans to increase the number of Iron Dome batteries, while bringing in the medium-range missile defense system David’s Sling.
