DD - how many Roo's does Australia have? This amount may only reflect 1% of the total population? Do they make their way into towns and do a little garbage picking - like our bears? When this culling is occurring does it only allow males to be shot or both sexes - short of shooting a pregnant Roo?

I was watching an episode of Bizarre Foods set in Oz last night. One guy said that 'roo meat is so good for you that if you have high cholesterol you can get a prescription to buy it at a discounted rate. Same with emu meat.

Doc - I've eaten a lot of weird things but lately - with the little time I have here on this Earth I'm eating what I like and Roo meat isn't really something I'd go out of my way to secure.

My wife say's to me - you eat nothing but crap - well that may be true - but I can ID with this crap better - than a nice slice of Roo meat on my plate.

The Kangaroo is not carniverous and no it is not a garbage collector ...some Kangaroos have been seen in the Suburb streets but that is rare

Only the four most abundant species of kangaroo and small numbers of two common wallaby species can be commercially harvested for export, and then only by licensed hunters in accordance with an approved management plan. These species are the Red kangaroo, Eastern grey kangaroo, Western grey kangaroo, Common Wallaroo (Euro), Bennetts wallaby and Pademelon (a type of wallaby).

Kangaroo harvesting is carried out under the strict environmental controls provided by the Australian Government’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. The commercial harvesting of widespread and abundant kangaroo species contributes to the sustainability of the Australian environment.

There are over 60 different species of kangaroo and their close relatives. While it is impossible to determine the exact number of kangaroos in Australia, the population of the four most common species is thought to be more than 50 million. All kangaroos belong to the super-family Macropodidae (or macropods, meaning ‘great-footed’).

The macropod family includes kangaroos, wallabies, wallaroos, pademelons, tree-kangaroos and forest wallabies. These species are also found in Papua New Guinea. Species in the macropod family vary greatly in size and weight, ranging from 0.5 kilograms (1.1 pounds) to 90 kilograms (200 pounds). The Potoroinae (potoroid) family of kangaroos includes the potoroo, bettong and rat-kangaroo. This family of kangaroos lives only in Australia

The harvesting of kangaroos is permitted on a quota basis that is reviewed annually and independent of market demand. Quotas are set on the basis of population size and trends, and long-term climate predictions. Conservation of the species remains the foremost consideration. This approach ensures that the harvesting of kangaroos is managed in an ecologically sustainable way.

There is no farming of kangaroos in Australia. Kangaroos are harvested in the wild by licensed hunters

DD - that's a lot or Roo's on the ground. Must be some real good grazer's I would assume they can do a lot of damage in the wild - besides breed like jack-rabbits. That's a lot!!!

When a herd moves about in great numbers looking for food , that is when they become a problem to the farmers etc ....and so the culling begins

but realisticly at the moment there are way to many of them ....if we went about killing a couple of million of them it would not put a dent in the armor so to speak but you would have a lot of people complaing about it

So.... how do you keep your wild herds down in numbers
