Default pearl Harbour

To this day.,,

how the hell did it happen?????

I've read all about it, downloaded, crosschecked, and still wonder as to the TRUE reasons something like this could happen.

I'm from the other side of the world, but I know this was a great loss to many people, who, I think, to this day , might JUST ask the same question.

Default easy answers

1. It cannot happen to us, at this place.
2. Army and Navy didn't share info.
3. Broken code was a diplomatic code, not military code.
4. Code breakers believe the strike was going to happen
around Indonesia.
5. Lost the Japanese carrier fleet in the Pacific.
6. Bad luck: all the early signs were not put together correctly
the radar warning
the sub attack
the 13 part message
the failed radio message
the not assigned urgent Western Telegram
Read "At Dawn We Slept" by Prague, it the single best source to answer your question.

Historically, many suspected that the IJN would hit Pearl Harbor but had no proof and were swimming against an institutional current that believed that Imperial Japan wouldn?t dare do such a thing. I believe it is called ?going with the flow?.

A classic example of this going with the flow was the early Pacific Naval engagements of 1942. It was widely believed in the USN that the Japanese had poor eyesight and therefore couldn?t fight a night Naval engagement. Given this bias, USN night fighting capability was not practiced or perfected. At the battle of Savo Island the IJN served the USN their head on a platter during night engagements. As it turned out the IJN was quite expert at night fighting and reaked havoc. One year later the USN caught up and could go against the IJN at night but it took a year to get up to speed and overcome the institutional bias. Several USN and Australian Cruisers at the bottom of ?Iron Bottom Sound? would seem to be fairly conclusive evidence that the ?poor eyesight? theory was bunk but it still took a bit to overcome the institutional bias and get sorted out. Pearl Harbor and Savo Island have a lot in common in that what we wish to be true often clouds judgment and sets false aspirations.

Default Yeah, kinda like

the terrorist attacks of 9/11/2001.

1) It can never happen here
2) The terrorists are not sophisticated enough to do any "real" damage
3) et.,etc., etc.

When are we going to wake up and smell the cordite ?!
