IVAN Update: Northwest Florida
Man, I wish I had a digital camera to be able to post some pics for ya'll!
I've lived here since 1950 and never seen anything like this. No wind yet...rather calm with light rain. But the storm surge is coming ashore. You can almost see the water rising...kind of like a bathtub filling. Water has already breached a major 4-lane highway on our barrier island. Water level is already up at least 3 feet in the bayous, with waves on top of that. Docks and piers are almost submerged. Waves in the Gulf are at least 15 feet high and have taken out a large section of our concrete fishing pier. The pier is normally 20 feet above the water, but waves are now breaking over the top of it. More later if I have power. There is no more visible beach. The water is now up to the edges of structures on the beach.

Update:
Conditions are deteriorating pretty fast now. Much more wave action in the bayous, which is taking out some private wooden docks and piers. Storm surge is now about 4 or 5 feet. Boats anchored offshore are riding pretty well, but boats tied up at piers are being battered against the piers and damaged. A Coast Guard unit off Pensacola has reported waves in the Gulf of 50-60 feet in height. The concrete pier I mentioned earlier is about 30 to 40 feet wide and a hundred yards out into the Gulf. The pilings are massive...square pilings about 6 feet in diameter. Not sure how thick the pier bed itself is. Looks like about 50 feet of the end of the pier is gone. I would estimate that the amount of concrete in the missing piece is about the size of one of the concrete German bunkers on Normandy beach. More later if power still on.

STEVE
How far up from the water are you? You said that if it's gonna come ashore as a 4, you're gonna get outta Dodge. Don't cut it too close, my friend. All the best to you, your Mom, and cat. Will be thinking good thoughts of you.

Maybe last update.
Eye is coming ashore about a hundred miles west of me. That will give me hurricane-force winds of Cat 1 or Cat 2 where I am. Should be okay but will lose power for undetermined time. El Tee and Gimpy have my cell phone number via PM. Lets hope the cell relay stations survive. Only way I know of making contact. Power is starting to fail intermittently. Will post again tomorrow if I have power. Frisco, I'm inland, away from the beach.
