Default Finally! The long awaited scientific proof!

http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117...-13762,00.html

Why women can't read maps

Researchers say it is all down to differences in the reliance of the sexes on either grey matter or white matter in their brains to solve problems.

They found that in intelligence tests men use 6.5 times as much grey matter as women, but women use nine times as much white matter.

Grey matter is brain tissue crucial to processing information and plays a vital role in aiding skills such as mathematics, map-reading and intellectual thought.

White matter connects the brain's processing centres and is central to emotional thinking, use of language and the ability to do more than one thing at once. Professor Rex Jung, a co-author of the study at the University of New Mexico, said: "This may help explain why men tend to excel in tasks requiring more local processing, like mathematics and map-reading, while women tend to excel at integrating information from various brain regions, such as is required for language skills. "These two very different pathways and activity centres, however, result in equivalent overall performance on broad measures of cognitive ability, such as those found on intelligence tests." Previous studies have shown that women have weaker spatial awareness than men, making it harder for them to read maps. Research has also found that in childhood, girls' vocabulary develops more quickly and that in later life women can speak 20,000 to 25,000 words a day compared to a man's 7000 to 10,000. For the study, published in the online edition of the journal NeuroImage, researchers performed a series of brain scans on 26 female and 22 male volunteers using magnetic resonance imaging equipment. All the volunteers were in good health, had no history of brain injury and the average IQ scores of the two sexes were similar. Their brains were scanned while they carried out tests designed to assess their general intelligence. Researchers then created a map of a brain showing the varying levels of activity in the brains of men and women. About 40 per cent of the human brain is grey matter and 60 per cent white matter.

Default Doc...

Maybe what's needed here,...
are talking maps?

Regardless, I can't wait till the women
get on your case.

Neil,

I do so love generalizations based on "research" especially when they use less than 50 people. They are probably all students at one University where their reputation and location bring in a specific type of student and the study was done to verify what a resident professor already believes.

I am an engineer and can do more than one thing at a time. This has made some engineers that I've worked with crazy because they can't (men are so cute).

Darrel CAN'T read a map. Period. Forget about it. His spacial awareness is entertaining but not useful.

For any of you who have seen those funky shaped boxes that a strewn around on counters for displays or drawings-Darrel cannot put one together without following the directions step by step (tab A into slot A, etc.). I can fold it into the final shape without reading the directions if I have a picture (yes, a 2 dimensional picture of a 3 dimensional object) to show what it will look like.

The fact that I don't think like a girl was verified when I scored off the (whose?) scale for women in engineering on an aptitude test.

Keep up the jokes. They are funny

Now Darrel's Joy, you're not going to tell me that most women can't talk circles around most men. Just go right now and tell your husband how your day was. Done it? Now go ask him how his day was. Well which was it: good, bad or OK?

Sorry,

When he comes home from work he tells me about his day from his best/worst customers to the people he works with.

He spent his Army career writing and is a better wordsmith than I am. :re:

Default Bob & Joy....

Gotcha both covered. Sorry, Doc.

But me buddy bullbravo... or Tony F., sent me a goodun, which believe that both Bob and Joy both can appreciate.

--------------------

Two bored casino dealers are waiting at
the craps table

--------------

An attractive young and EXTREMELY well built blond
woman arrived and place $20 THOUSAND DOLLARS
down for only a single roll of the dice.

--------------

She said: "I hope you don't mind, I feel
much luckier when completely nude".

--------------

With that she stripped from the neck down, rolled
the dice and yelled: "Come ON, Baby"!
"Mama needs new clothes".

--------------

As the dice came to a stop, she jumped up and down
and squealed: "YES! YES! YES! I WON, I WON"!

--------------

she hugged each of the dealers and then picked up
her winnings and clothes, and quickly departing
and leaving the dealers dumbfounded.

--------------

Finally, one of the dealers asked: "What did she roll"?

--------------

The other answered: "I don't know - thought you
were watching".

--------------

MORAL: Not all blondes are dumb.
-----------But, all men are men

I have never seen any evidence that women are any better or worse at math, physics or engineering reasoning abilities, tiz all same-same as far as I can tell. What I have seen is that this field has gone from almost no women present to equal representation and this has happened over the last two decades or so. Actually my second daughter is a Masters Level Engineer and she can hold her own in any mob of engineers, cept against her Pa, of course.

That being said, I have noticed that the Lasses I have come to know personally all share a common void of map reading ability. I think it?s a matter of lack of interest and is similar to the Guy thing where we?d rather take a switching with a green willow stick then read a stupid instruction book. Damn, I nearly got a ? hp Sears screw drive garage door opener installed before I had to admit momentary defeat and consult the gawdrotting, stupid, instruction book. I had to make sure no one saw this unforgivable and unmanly act and don?t like to talk about it, eh. :cl:

My wife, for some odd reason, loves maps and acting as navigator on long trips. However, whenever I ask her how far we have to go, she'll measure it with her fingers, hold them up and say, "About an inch!"

And she got a trophy for orienteering in college ROTC!!:re:
