'Whim' led Crowley to Vietnam, personal growth

For John Crowley, the road to Vietnam was a winding one, taking him
first to Texas, then Georgia, then Greenland, New York and Florida,
before reaching first Vietnam then New Mexico.

Along the way, he married, had two children (a third was born after
his eight-year military stint ended) and decided that having a
vagabond type life wasn't such a bad thing, especially when moving
around allowed him and his family to see much of this country.

"It was the best decision I had made up until that point in my life,"
said Crowley, for whom four grandchildren have since come along as
well. "The military asked you to stand up and be counted, and I will
always be grateful to the Air Force for providing that guidance."

He said he enlisted on "a whim," going along with a friend. He decided
to join the Air Force, partially because he wanted the chance to fly
