King Arpad.
He was a talented military commander and was instrumental in establishing Budapest around 886 A.D. According to the historians, the Magyar (Hungarians) migrated west from an area that is now within present day Mongolia. Known for excellent horsemanship and as deadly mounted archers, they were much feared light and fast Cavalry. Though not Tartars, they foretold of a much greater invasion yet to come. A medieval prayer tells the tale: ?Oh Lord, protect us from the horses and arrows of the Magyar?.

Robert,

Hero?s Plaza was constructed for the millennium celebrations of 1886. The Cav statues are of cast bronze and about twenty ft. tall each and perhaps as much as ten tons in weight, maybe more. The Plaza, like so much of Budapest, is very Victorian and of a different time and circumstance.

Judging from what I?ve seen, there was a lot of wealth among the ?nobility? during the period of the Austro-Hungarian Empire days and all that came to an extreme abrupt halt as a result of WWI.
Newer construction ranges from Soviet style prison motif to more modern structures that are right up to date. But not a whole bunch of the latter as yet, but it's happining slowly but surely.
