Default NATO AWACS demonstrates full control of unmanned airborne system

On 2 August, NATO Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft demonstrated control of the ScanEagle unmanned airborne system during the Empire Challenge 2010 event at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. This was the first time that NATO AWACS demonstrated full control of an unmanned aircraft by an airborne command and control platform during an operational scenario. NATO owns a fleet of AWACS “E-3A” radar aircraft, modified Boeing 707s that provide an immediately available airborne surveillance, warning and command capability.
