Question Prelude To The American Civil War

5-20-2022

Many people assume that “The American Civil War” was begun with “The Bombardment of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina!” Or that this particular war, “The War For Southern Independence (or The Civil War, if you prefer)”, was strictly orchestrated by President Abraham Lincoln alone! “This idea is not totally accurate however, as the letter below aptly points out!”

“In a letter delivered on January 31, 1861, South Carolina Governor Pickens demanded of President Buchanan that he surrender Fort Sumter because "I regard that possession is not consistent with the dignity or safety of the State of South Carolina." Over the next few months repeated calls for evacuation of Fort Sumter by the government of South Carolina, were ignored! Union attempts to resupply the garrison were repulsed on January 9, 1861 when the first shots of the war, fired by cadets from the Citadel, prevented the Union from completing this task!”

Now I know that many of you out there may be ‘pretty familiar’ with most of the aspects of “The War Between The States (The Civil War)”, and the lead-up to that four bloody years of internal conflict, but for those of you who are not, I thought that the contents of this little letter (above), delivered on the 31st January 1861, some three months before the actual firing upon ‘Fort Sumter’ - just might be of interest to you?

Fort Sumter was named after General Thomas Sumter - a Revolutionary War hero. It was built after the Burning of Washington during the War of 1812 . And Although it was never completed, it is now ”An integral part of Our Glorious American History!”
