Talking A Grunt's View

from a slick. How many of yall sat like this with the weight of your ruck keeping ya in. For all you mech grunts, this is what a walking grunt's ride to work looked like[Photo by exgrunt][psyco-vet white oak]

Never was on a Huey but spent a lot of time sitting in the hatch of an old H-34. Was that the weight of the ruck that kept us in?

Funny how we were more worried about getting shot from the ground than about falling out.

Talking Weight of Ruck

or C-Force. I know the first time I rode like that[FNG] and the slick made a turn where I was looking straight down I was trying to claw thru that metal floor for fingerholds. It scared me so bad I almost forgot what might be waiting when I got off that sucker.LOL

Thumbs down

Not in my platoon but 3/5Cav. Lost a KIA. Put him on a slick and he wasn't there when they landed in Dong Ha. I believe he is listed amoung the MIA :cd:

Default The best part of the war

sitting flying sideways on a warm central highlands morning, the slick vibrating, the roaring in your ear, the sun just starting to crack behind you.
You pat your rifle and check the safety one more time, give your LBE the final twitch.
the pilot goes into "Evade Mode" and youre twisting and turning, the trees and bushes fly by at almost eye level. the slick lowers and you stand on the skid. You were scared before but all you can think about as you stand on the skid is looking at the ground trying to decide which big bush to run into. Nothings gonna stop you now
slick hovers down to 6' and youre off and running, diving into the brush.
The slick takes off, a 5 second drop, and everything is very quiet once more

so I was told, anyway. Thanks for the pics, Frank

James

Lightbulb Slicks

Loved flying on them because you could actually get cool. But lighting cigarettes was an art form. When that was my job I never had any nose hairs.
Talk about twisted: whenever we went into a hot LZ I had the urge to jump out with the grunts. Must have been some sort of guilt feeling, knowing I'd be spending the evening in the NCO club and they would be........

Stay healthy,
Andy

Default That could be me!

Except the guys not barfing coming into a Hot LZ!

Great pictures. Deb has often wondered why we rode like that and why we didn't fall out. As far as falling out, I told her we were ordered not to.

Packo (wish I could find one of those smiley face things that were barfin' to put on this post)
