The Ugly American?
Pictures are slamming all over the world of American Soldiers abusing (sometimes sexually) Iraqi Prisoners being held in captivity! Now I have heard some say that these ghastly embarrassments were geared to extract information that could save American lives. Others claim that the acts of the few should not stain the honor of the many, and in this, I totally agree! I can still remember the pictures of bodies of Americans being dismembered, butchered, drug through the streets, beaten during interrogation, and murdered in ways that no sane human being could, or should tolerate! The impact of these photos, however, was usually short lived! My own wife?s uncle was brutalized and starved to death by some of the same savages who now seek to vilify us for the actions of a few nut cases. And more than this, our own media, like the yellow journalists of old, are supplying the ammunition! On the other side of the coin, our politicos are still more interested in saving face, than in getting to the bottom of this issue. An issue, I might add, that could and should have been handled internally. For by turning this into another Alamo, U.S.S. Maine or Pearl Harbor (There were more lives lost at the WTC than on 7 December 1941), we are gifting the terrorist enemies of America, with a reason, a renewed cause, world support from the weak of values, and the very real chance of ringing in more maniacs to the morbid terrorist cause! Apologies are great, and so is the offer of compensation to those who got their honor bruised by a few zealous fools (We have them too, believe it or not)!? But what about those Black Americans whose bodies and minds were ripped apart in the Tuskegee Experiments, or those literally destroyed through other nuclear, biological, and radiological experiments that were conducted by our own, and upon our own in the last 65 years plus? There were no apologies, very little compensation, or even promises that these domestic atrocities would even end, if they ever did?! More times than not, the American victims were belittled, dismissed as loonies, threatened and maybe (?) even worse by our own people! ?Where was the outcry then?? But then, we have no internal world court, we laugh at international attempts at an American accounting, and as for the victims themselves (those who live), they are thrown to the dogs, cast aside, declared expendable, erased from record, or allowed to die, killed off by time, apathy, political power, and bureaucratic assets in the Billion$! After all, we now live in a nation where the welfare of a foreign villain is of far more importance than the life?s blood of the patriot! The media saga of the unfortunate abuse of a scant few enemies of democracy, is far more worthy of attention, after all, than those in our own uniforms who were subjected as involuntary lab rats to radiation, deadly defoliants, hallucinogens, and who knows what else, by all-American Corporations, under all-American orders! Again, the welfare of our nation and her gallant military finish a poor second to international public opinion, and so it will remain until a ?United We? legally draw the line and say ?NO MORE!!? VERITAS
