NAPLES, Italy –
On July 8, 2022, an F/A-18 Super Hornet assigned to Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 1, embarked aboard USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), blew overboard due to unexpected heavy weather in the Mediterranean Sea. The carrier was conducting a replenishment-at-sea, which was safely terminated through established procedures.

All personnel aboard the ship are accounted for.

One Sailor received minor injuries while conducting operations during the unexpected heavy weather. The Sailor is in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery.

USS Harry S. Truman and embarked aircraft remain full mission capable.

Details and the cause of the incident are under investigation.

Personal note: Wow that is uncanny I recall tie downs were always in place during rough weather. I recall some storms blowing water over the bow with tremendous winds and water. The banging on the bow and the sides of the ship were extremely loud at times in rough weather. The ship would rock and roll and the waves crashing onto hull were loud.
-
Walking on the catwalks during storms - we would look for our escorts much smaller than a carrier - and you would see them pitch and roll as the big waves would make it look like they were sinking as sea. The catwalks on the side of ships could at times be ripped
off the sides by the waves. All hatches secured but even the far into the center of the
ship you could hear the pounding of the waves - even in the galley the guys would jump every now and then when a big one would hit us. Hour and hour she's pitch and roll and the banging would cease and then another one would hit over and over many guys couldn't sleep while others slept calmly during the whole process.
-
Station checks were made hourly - log book enteries would indicate any leakage and that maintenance was called.
-
Shorlty before we ran into the big storms - you'd hear over the PA - Batten Down all the Hatches - secure all aircraft and then it would start - the banging of the waves against the ship could be heard in the galley - the below deckmen would hear the pounding all the way through the ship - pitching and yawing over and over - you'd swear we were going to sink - guess what the training prevents such ordeals. Watches would have to check every space on the hour and note any water leakage. Repairmen were called to secure any damaged areas and inspections were hourly until the storm had passed.
-
Topside watchers would be drenched by ocean water - some of the guys would run to the head and throw up their dinner. Hours later it would calm down and a full shipwide search was made to make sure we were water-tight.
-
Divisions would muster up and make sure all hands were accounted for.
-
Yep I went through several of those storms in my day. Muster was called to ensure all men were accounted for.
