Accessories, spares, and contractor support are all included in the contract. Additionally, it allows for the acquisition of NGSW weapons by other Department of Defense services and, potentially, Foreign Military Sales countries. In addition, they are compact, fire more lethal ammunition, reduce recoil, increase barrel performance, and incorporate integrated muzzle sound and flash reduction. Both guns shoot standard 6.8-millimeter ammunition supplied by the government and cartridges designed by vendors. The new bullet comprises a variety of tactical and training rounds that improve accuracy and make emerging threats more dangerous than both 5.56mm and 7.62mm ammunition. The XM5 and XM250 will be coupled with the XM157 Fire Control, a ruggedized advanced fire control system that improves the close combat force's accuracy and lethality. The XM157 features a variable magnification optic (1X8), backup engraved reticle, laser rangefinder, ballistic calculator, atmospheric sensor suite, compass, Intra-Soldier Wireless, visible and infrared targeting lasers, and a digital display overlay. It is manufactured in Barneveld, Wisconsin, by Vortex Optics, a subsidiary of Sheltered Wings.
