PREBELLUM:
September 26, 1939 (Year of the Hare [Ky Mao]): The French ban all Indochinese organizations "relating to the Third International." FIRST INDOCHINA WAR - THE BEGINNING September 26, 1945 (Year of the Rooster [At Dau]): Saigon uprising: The city is in chaos, without water or electricity, and each day the troops of the French try to extend the area under their control, while various armed groups organize themselves as guerillas in the periphery of the city. Lt. Col. A. Peter Dewey, the U.5. commander of the O.S.S. in Saigon, becomes the second known American casualty in Indochina (the first being one of Chennault's Flying Tigers, shot down over Hanoi by the Japanese during World War II) when he is mistaken for a French officer at a Viet Minh roadblock. Elsewhere, Ho Chi Minh issues a call "to safeguard the independence of the homeland" and Viet Minh troops in the north start heading south. The leadership of the Trotskyite organization La Lutte starts reorganizing outside of Saigon after being dispersed after the French coup. Some of the La Lutte leaders are in contact with the Viet Minh Committee, which also starts negotiations with the British during this period. SECOND INDOCHINA WAR: September 26, 1963 (Year of the Hare [Quy Mao]) (US Advisory): Snipers wound three men of the Third Battalion, 2nd ARVN Division near Tam Ky. September 26, 1964 (Year of the Dragon [Giap Thin]) (US Advisory): The first South Vietnamese naval patrol after the Gulf of Tonkin incidents is authorized, with South Vietnamese PT boats to go 60 miles north of the boundary line, but never closer than 12 nautical miles from shore, to probe the North Vietnamese reaction. September 26, 1965 (Year of the Snake [At Ti]) (US Defense): The NLF announces over Hanoi Radio that the Viet Cong have executed two American military prisoners in retaliation for the execution of three VC by the South Vietnamese government at Da Nang on September 22. September 26, 1969 (Year of the Rooster [Ky Dau]) (US Summer-Fall 1969): During an extraction of a MACV SOG CCC company in Kontum Province, the 361st AWC is hit by the heaviest concentration of B-40 rockets the unit has ever known. September 26, 1971 (Year of the Boar [Tan Hoi]) (US Consolidation I): North Vietnamese forces launch heavy attacks on South Vietnamese positions along the Cambodian border. THIRD INDOCHINA WAR: THE END September 26, 1989 (Year of the Snake [Ky Ti]): Vietnam completes its withdrawal of forces from Cambodia (Kampuchea). Some 23,000 PAVN soldiers were killed and 55,000 wounded during the 11-year war. |
