Thumbs up

Beldan, in 1970 the Cavalry Regiment I was in patrolled at the platoon level. Never had a dog on point. Early on I got a guy named Shorty ( cause he was) from the 75th Rangers. He loved to walk point and he was REAL GOOD at it to so every day he did - loved that man. He carried his 16. Welcome home and keep posting !

Default DMZ Point

LT,

Fortunately we had some of those classic point men too. In the area we were patrolling ( Market Place and environs ) a good point man and scout dog , they missed very little. NVA hated those dogs . We were running usually Company sized patrols.

Default Point 1969

I walked Point for my platoon everyday and for my Company every three days, all 3 platoons rotated everyday.I carried a 12 gauge shotgun, model Standard. It held 7 rounds and each round had 9 steel balls.I carried two M-14 magazine pouch's with about 30-35 rounds.I also carried a 45 cal pistol. One of the guys in another platoon walked point with a grease gun,an old and heavy and I can say unaccurate weapon. It fired 45 cal rounds and it had heavy steel magazines. He also carried a 45 pistol. In our battalion it was up to whoever was walking on point as to what he wanted to use.I walked point from Oct 69 until I was wounded Feb 14,1970.

Default Point man

On my second tour, one of our most effective point men was a real pro from New Orleans, and rumor had it that he former job was an enforcer with a "family." Golly, I wonder what that meant. Anywho, he carried a Thompson sub-MG that he liberated from an ARVN unit, and we could always tell when he felt the need to recon my fire, or was responding to an ambush.

I have an article somewhere about a dude from Hawaii, Samoa, or Guam, that walked point for most of five years in 'Nam. From what I recall he carried an AK, had black clothes on, and a VC slouch hat and many times fooled them into thinking he was one of them before he blew them away. I believe it was in the Time-Life Vietnam series of books. I will post it when I find it. I salute all point men and scout dogs. You are true heroes, one and all !!!

Welcome Home !!

Larry

And that White Oak is the most efficient weapon on point in my opinion.

A couple of guys from 1966 and I were talking about pointmen this morning. Some were "bird dog" talented ,they had the guts and the brains to be brilliant at the job. Some were not quite up to the mark and seldom were asked to work point again. Thats ok they were all good at something.

The Scout Dogs were magnificent when we had them but the Pointmen were the mainstay.
