Congress Passes Veterans Cost-of-Living Adjustment
Week of October 16, 2006 The House recently passed S. 2562, the Veterans' Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2006. S. 2562 will provide, effective December 1, 2006, a cost-of-living adjustment to the rates of disability compensation for veterans with service-connected disabilities and the rates of dependency and indemnity compensation paid to certain spouses and dependent children of service-disabled veterans. S. 2562 will be sent to the President for his signature. Good news!

Don't expect the COLA to be more that 2.5% for Vets. I am not against a COLA for the military but lets put this in perspective. When I went to work for DOD in 1992, I made the same as a Lt. Col. I now make the same as a 1st Lt. Not a complaint, mind you, but finally the Military is making what they should but I just want to say that Government Employees, who have dedicated themselves to helping their brothers and sister, have not kept up in any way shape, or form. Am I complaining...naw....it's good to see the military getting some bucks for doing the job they do....but in the mean time, not all Guvment employees are lazy bums who get way too many benefits. That's a fact. The most prestigious job you could ever have at one time was a RN working for the VA. Now, private hospitals pay much more and give better benefits. Why would the good ones want to stay? Think about it. I could make $95.00 an hour in private practice from Tri-Care, which is the military health system. I wouldn't be able to treat PTSD, but I could treat marital and family problems. I make less than $30 an hour seeing my Irag and Afghanie Vets. The only reason I stay is to see these men, and I won't be doing it much longer. You can't attract quality people in the VA and DOD with the money they pay. Deb and I only do it because we care but if I was young.....you'd almost have to be a fool to do it.

My kid is making more now as a Major with over 18 than I was making as a Colonel with over 26. My retirement has not kept up with inflation.
