North Korea Launches Fourth Missile Test This Month As Regional Tensions Rise
By: Siladitya Ray - Forbes News - 01-17-22

TOPLINE North Korea test fired two suspected ballistic missiles on Monday from its capital city Pyongyang’s international airport, the fourth test launch carried out by the country since the start of the new year, signaling a rise in tensions in the Korean peninsula.

* South Korea’s military said it detected two projectiles—likely short-range ballistic missiles—fired from the Sunan airport that flew eastward about 380 kilometers into the sea, Yonhap News Agency reported.

* Japanese Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi also reported the missile launch, calling it a “grave problem for the international community” and said it landed outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

* South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who is visiting the United Arab Emirates, called for efforts to ensure stability in the region, his office said in a statement.

* Members of South Korea’s National Security Council also pushed for stalled nuclear talks with Pyongyang to resume.

The U.S. military's Indo-Pacific Command said in response to the latest launch: “While we have assessed that this event does not pose an immediate threat to U.S. personnel or territory, or to our allies, these missile launches highlight the destabilizing impact of the DPRK’s illicit weapons program.”

Ballistic missile launches by North Korea are banned under a series of resolutions passed by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). However, Pyongyang has shown very little regard for the ban by test-firing several ballistic missiles in the past year, including a test launch last week.

In the previous two weeks, North Korea carried out three other test launches, two of which it claims are hypersonic missiles and one ballistic missile launched from a train. After a two month lull in November and December, North Korea resumed test firing of various missiles after its leader Kim Jong Un vowed to further bolster the country’s military at a national leadership conference in late December. The Biden administration reacted to the tests by sanctioning five North Koreans over their roles in obtaining equipment and technology for the country’s missile programs. Washington also said that it will pursue fresh U.N. sanctions against Kim’s regime. North Korean officials blasted the sanctions as acts of “provocation” and warned of a stronger and clearer response. Korean President Moon Jae-in has struck a more conciliatory tone on the North in the past few months. In his new year’s address, Moon said he will continue to seek the restoration of dialogue with North Korea and push for peace in the region until the end of his term in May.

Personal note: Kim is back into his show and tell launches. Per my prior post
North Korea is a wild card for China - Russia and the US. You never know what
this Wild Card will do next? Will he start something that will eventually result
in a nuclear catastrophe? He may also sell his hardware to radical groups in
the near future - and then the world itself will implode because they didn't
believe he would do this. This world is marching time and the way it's going
- it won't be too much longer - before it will be late - to save it!

O Almighty Lord God, who neither slumberest nor sleepest; Protect and assist, we beseech thee, all those who at home or abroad, by land, by sea, or in the air, are serving this country, that they, being armed with thy defence, may be preserved evermore in all perils; and being filled with wisdom and girded with strength, may do their duty to thy honour and glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
