Fire prevention week officially kicked off on October 1st when Col. Chad Manske, 100th Air Refueling Wing Commander and Chief Master Sgt. Charles Funkhouser, 100th Civil Engineer Squadron fire chief signed the fire prevention week proclamation. During the week firefighters pushed the message, “BEEP, BEEP, BEEP a sound you can live with”. The message will hopefully help families ensure safety and prevent casualties by keeping working fire alarms in each home. During the firefighter challenge 6 teams and a host of individuals dressed in firefighters’ protective gear competed in a series of events including a stair climb, hose hoist, cone run, hose advance and victim rescue. Teams also completed a bucket brigade challenge, simulating dosing a structural fire. Competitors were cheered on by fellow participants, colleagues, friends and family. Master Sgt. Michael Liston, Assistant Chief of Fire Prevention, emceed the event, which was planned and carried out by Technical Sgt. Travis McNicholas and Staff Sgt. Jessica Smiley, 100th Civil Engineer Squadron. Although Liston would have enjoyed having many more competitors from around the base, he was pleased with the turnout and was impressed by some of the times that individuals completed the competition in. Taking first place during the team competition was Fat Camp, with a total time of four minutes and six seconds followed closely by second place finishers the Latecomers with a total time of four minutes and 29 seconds. Fat Camp team members included Technical Sgt. Jared Peaches, Staff Sgt. Jon McKenzie, Staff Sgt. Michael O’Rorke and Senior Airman Nick Fabozzi, all from the 321st Special Tactics Squadron. Senior Airman Fabozzi also finished the men’s individual course in first place with a time of 1:26 followed closely by Staff Sgt. Marty Bettelyun with 1:33 on the clock. Laura Reynolds, civilian, 100 Force Support Squadron took first place in the women’s individual competition completing the course in 3:08. Staff Sgt. Fantasia Expinoza, 100 Maintenance Squadron completed the course in 3:54 capturing second place. Other fire prevention events throughout the week included visits to Beck Row Primary School and Busy Bees Nursery from Sparky and firefighter Gary as well as story time with Sparky at the child development center and information booths around the base.
