Dak To was the most frightning place I fought in. After that was Chu Moor. You could just feel the NVA in Dak To, it seemed that they were all around you there.

They were . My company in the 101st had been over-run there just before I joined them [JUN66]. As far as I know, the area was never pacified the whole war. The time I spent at Kontum wasn't much better. When the Communist made their defeating push into the south against the ARVNs, Dak To/Kontum was a major jumping-off point for them.

Tomorrow is the anniversary of this battle, so I want to bring this thread forward. I want the men that never walked back down that hill to be remembered. I also want the men that did walk back down the hill, with the motion picture of those days forever in their minds, to be remembered.

I will always be proud to call you my friend, Ron.

It was just after day light that the LT came and said, "Are You Ready"? Yea sure.
Breakfast at the mess tent, Briefing, equipment check.
More briefing and officer conference, Mortar check, spot rounds, Artillery check smoke round, Radio Frequency list and radio check. Grid map for extraction and "plan B". Assembly, equipment check. water, ammo, etc.
The place where patrols wet out headed north was on a slight hill with only a path leading out, it kinda made you get into single file.
When the 173 started to move out down that small trail it was almost an Hour before we would bring up the rear, Thats how many guys were in this patrol. It must have stretched for 3-4 miles.
The fighting had been intense around the hills to the north and to the NW of Dak To in the last 2-3 weeks and I think the plan was to go to the area that hill 875 was and investigate, upon arrival it would be determined which hill to go up, (I think that was the plan). But then Army 'patrol' plans were kinda iffy at best , especially when your going out looking for a fight.

During that period, I was a Sergeant in CoE, 2ndBn, 4th MarRegt (The Magnificent Bastards of 2/4)...we were working the west side of Hwy 1...searching/clearing for what would later become the Quang Tri Combat Base. It wasn't until we got back to the rear area, where the cantonment was being built by SeaBees and CbtEngrs, that we found out about that truly heroic battle fought by some truly HEROIC Soldiers!!!

With sincere respect to ALL who fought the good fight on that Bloody Hill.

Dak To never changed, the fighting may not have been as intense as it was in 67 when the 173rd and 4th and 101st made there trips into Hell. But in 69 when my unit did it 2 week stint there you just knew it was a place where the NVA were watching you all the time.
