Brown pelicans are a pretty common sight in the area. Monterey Bay is one of the cleanest, unpolluted, bodies of water on the west coast. The abundent wildlife that lives and frequents here is a testimony to that.

So if you're ever in the area make it a "must see". Both the wildlife and the boating public are well protected here. The smaller boat in front of the Coast Guard boat is a National Marine Sanctuary patrol boat that makes sure none of the wildlife is harmed or harassed.

It's a picture-post-card-beautiful place with a small fisherman's wharf that has some great sea food restaurants, and much smaller crowds than the more famous one in San Francisco. Let me know when you're coming, and I'll let you buy me a seafood lunch or dinner

Whale watches are great. I've been on about a half-dozen out of Gloucester, Nantucket, and Boston. The best one was several years agowhen two humpback whales spent over 2 hours right next to the boat. One came up straight out of the water scraping himself along the side of the boat and I reached out and touched my hand to his side as he was doing that. I looked right into his eye. What an experience! Unfortunately, one of them took a serious dump next to the boat. What an ungodly smell! Sort of put a new spin on the term "lower than whale sh*t!"

Those are some great pictures, thank you for sharing them with us. One comment, the Coast Guard only has small boats, lol.

Tom,

I was stationed at Ft. Ord for Infantry AIT. The firing ranges were on the bay. I remember the sea lions and more than seeing them, smelling them. The aroma by the firing range was unbelievable.

I did BCT at Ft. Ord. I, too, remember some of the ranges near the bay. Remember double timing through all of that sand, too.

I didn't know that Ft. Ord had an Infantry AIT until I met one of my best friends, James [exlrrp], 6-7 yrs. ago. You're only about the 3rd-4th guy that I know of doing Infantry AIT there. Most of the guys I came in contact with either went through Ft. Polk, LA, or Ft. Gordon, GA. I went through Ft. Gordon. I think most Airborne Infantry went through there. When finished, they just put us on buses to Ft. Benning. I don't know how well all that sand and mild weather prepared you for Nam, but LA or GA wasn't much of a stretch .

Frisco,

I dunno about sand, but do you remember low-crawling through that Georgia RED CLAY?

That stuff was STILL in some of my Army gear when I got out, and there's probably still some around here somewhere!

Great pics and great thread! Thanx for posting!

Sure do, Steve. And any Nam vet can tell you about the red dirt in the dry season and the red mud in the monsoon season. Like I said, not much of a stretch .
