NEW YORK—Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano today visited New York City to deliver remarks to the American Association of Exporters and Importers (AAEI) reiterating the Department's continued commitment to securing the global supply chain, meet with stakeholders and private sector partners, and deliver remarks at the New York University School of Law on DHS' homeland security efforts ten years after the 9/11 attacks.

"America is stronger than we were a decade ago," said Secretary Napolitano. "We have made great strides to secure our nation against a large attack or other disaster, protect our critical infrastructure and cyber networks, and engage a broader range of Americans in the shared responsibility for our security."

During her remarks to the AAEI, Secretary Napolitano underscored the Department's continued partnership with the private sector to strengthen global supply chain security through programs such as the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT)—a voluntary public-private sector partnership program that strengthens cargo security throughout the international supply chain by working closely with importers, carriers, consolidators, licensed customs brokers, and manufacturers. C-TPAT, which has grown from seven private sector partners when launched in 2001 to more than 10,000 today, is the first worldwide supply chain security initiative of its kind to help ensure a more secure and expeditious supply chain.

She also highlighted the Obama administration's continued progress toward the development of a National Strategy for Global Supply Chain Security—an effort that will help ensure the country is resilient in response to large-scale events while maintaining the flow of commerce. DHS has solicited and incorporated input from industry and the international community throughout the development of this strategy, and we will continue to work with our federal partners to better protect against large-scale threats, including ones that could disrupt the U.S. economy.

While in New York, Secretary Napolitano also met with pharmaceutical industry leaders to discuss DHS' efforts to combat intellectual property (IP) theft through initiatives such as the National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center—a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations-led task force that brings together partners from ICE, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and 16 other key federal agencies to share information, develop initiatives, coordinate enforcement actions, and conduct investigations related to IP theft

Secretary Napolitano also delivered remarks at an event hosted by the Brennan Center for Justice at the New York University School of Law—discussing the progress the United States has made in securing the nation from terrorism since the September 11, 2011, attacks and the Department's ongoing efforts to counter violent extremism, combat terrorism and prepare and respond to the ever-evolving threats we face.
