Robert Rivera Wins Local Geography Bee David Aaron, Lakenheath Middle School Social Studies teacher Lakenheath Middle School held its 23rd annual Geography Bee sponsored by the National Geographic Society Friday, 7 January. There were ten finalists selected from 6th, 7th, and 8th grade houses. Col. Cassie Barlow, Commander of the 48th Mission Support Squadron, posed the questions provided by the National Geographic Society. The geography bee questions required an innate knowledge of the world: its geography and its various cultures. One of the questions in the championship round was "Which country observes the New Year celebration known as Tet? Robert Rivera, 7th grader and son of SSgt Robert and Denyse Rivera, knew to the answer was Viet Nam. Robert went on to answer other questions correctly to win the title "Lakenheath Middle School Geography Bee Champion." Denaje Carvin (8th grade) came in a close second. One factor contributing to Robert's knowledge of the world is the opportunity provided by the military for families to live in and visit so much of the world. Robert was able to apply his personal experiences to the facts he has learned in DoDDS schools. The results -- Robert Rivera is LMS Geography Bee Champion, 2011! Robert will now take a written exam provided by the National Geographic Society to determine his eligibility to represent DoDDS Europe at the national finals in Washington DC.
