St. Clair County veterans work to add names to memorial

PORT HURON, Mich. (AP) — Two St. Clair County veterans who are on a
mission to honor military men and women who have made the ultimate
sacrifice face many obstacles in their ongoing effort.

About a year ago, Dave Belair, a Vietnam veteran and Port Huron
resident, began an effort to trace the origins of two memorial tablets
in Port Huron's Pine Grove Park. He has since been joined by Korean
War veteran Joe Herber.

"I've spent many hours trying to track this stuff down," Belair told
the Times Herald for a Thursday story. "It's been a paper chase."

The tablets bear the names of about 300 local soldiers killed in both
world wars, Korea and Vietnam. Belair and Herber hope to add the names
of five servicemen killed since Vietnam, but they want permission
first from those responsible for the tablets.

Despite months of searching through worn newspaper clippings and
talking to veterans across the county, the men have few leads.
Although the city maintains tablets as part of the park, it has never
been involved in the inscription of names.

The team knows the first memorial was created in 1954 by the St. Clair
County Memorial Tablet Association. The association then gave all
