The former commander of Army Training and Doctrine Command passed away on Monday at age 71, TRADOC confirmed in a tweet on Thursday.

Retired Gen. John Abrams served 36 years in the Army, enlisting as an armor crewman in 1966 and retiring as TRADOC commander in 2002.

Abrams was the son of retired Gen. Creighton Abrams Jr., a former Army chief of staff, and brother of Gen. Robert Abrams, the current Army Forces Command chief, and retired Brig. Gen. Creighton Abrams III.

Both John Abrams and his father commanded V Corps during their careers, according to the Association of the U.S. Army. He also commanded the 2nd Infantry Division, the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment and Joint Task Force Kuwait. He also is known for redesigning the 2nd Infantry Division’s Indian head logo, according to AUSA.

Following retirement, Abrams founded and served as CEO of consulting firm Abrams Learning & Information Systems, Inc., while serving as a military analyst for the Associated Press.
