We're Winning
We're Winning
The State Department is out with its annual Patterns of Global Terrorism report, and the findings are encouraging. "International acts of terror in 2003 were the fewest in more than 30 years," according to CNN. The report found that "190 acts of international terrorism occurred in 2003--a slight drop from 198 attacks the previous year and the lowest total since 1969." That's also a 45% decrease since 2001, when America became engaged in the war on terror. The report says Iraq is "a central battleground in the global war on terrorism," which should end any debate about whether liberating Iraq was a good idea. The report does not, however, list attacks on U.S. servicemen in Iraq, which do not fit the definition of terrorism (attacks against civilians). It's a timely reminder of how grateful we all should feel to those who risk their lives protecting us from terrorism. The New York Times, meanwhile, reports from Jidda, Saudi Arabia: "A string of significant terrorist actions, all within days of one another, in major Arab capitals, may signal that the war in Iraq is fueling the very kind of extremism it was supposed to curtail, Arab officials and analysts said Thursday." Wow, stop the presses, Arab officials and analysts criticize America. But isn't it more newsworthy that the State Department numbers suggest the Times' clich? is false?
