If you and your family spend a lot of time outdoors during warm weather, especially if you hike or walk in wooded areas or tall grass, you are likely to find ticks on yourself or your children. Ticks are a matter of concern because they can spread disease--especially Lyme disease--but other diseases as well. Here's the good news--prompt removal of ticks usually ensures your family will remain illness free; ticks need to remain attached to you for at least 24 hours to transmit disease, according to the Mayo Clinic. To remove a tick, use tweezers that can pinch the tick near its mouth parts, pulling the tick out slowly. Don't twist it, which may leave mouth parts embedded in the skin.
