Arrow Navy League National Convention Downtown San Diego!

The 2004 Navy League of the United States National Convention

The Broadway Pier and San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina, June 9-13, 2004

We?re now counting weeks, not months, until the 2004 National Navy League of the United States, www.navyleague.org Convention comes to San Diego, June 9th -13th. We are well on our way to hosting an extraordinary event for both Convention attendees and the citizens of San Diego. We invite you to attend. You need not be a member to attend. If you do register and participate, you will find it near impossible resisting joining the Navy League.

The Convention program of activities has something for everyone. There will be committee meetings and panel discussions on aspects of the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine as well as a host of internal Navy League matters. The San Diego Union Tribune and other members of the local media will be providing more information on the various aspects of the Convention. Ditto this forum.

Terrific social and educational events include:

* The very special kick-off event ?Sea Power at the Broadway Pier? June 9th-10th, the first time that elements of all four sea services have been assembled at one location for a Navy League event or in San Diego. Ships of the United States Navy and United States Coast Guard, along with the oldest U.S. flagged Merchant Marine ship afloat, Star of India and a United States Marine Corps static display will be available for visits. On an adjacent pier will be the retired USS MIDWAY, the historic aircraft carrier; she has activities of her own and is open to the public.
* The Welcome Aboard Reception the evening of Wednesday, June 9th
* The San Diego Harbor Cruise Friday evening, June 11th
* The wonderful Dinner-Dance Saturday evening, June 12th
* The trips to museums, Tijuana and the Viejas Casino
* The tours to the Pt. Loma submarine base and elsewhere.

So plan to attend. For $30.00 you can register in advance or upon arrival and participate in a truly once in a lifetime experience. Beyond registration there are no fees to attend the multitude of meetings and workshops. Except for "Sea Power at the Broadway Pier" the events have fees associated with them.

Care to know a little more about the Navy League?

The Navy League of the United States was founded in 1902 with the encouragement of President Theodore Roosevelt. The Navy League is unique among military-oriented associations in that it is a civilian organization dedicated to the education of our citizens, including our elected officials, and the support of the men and women of the sea services and their families.

The objective and purpose of the Navy League is educational and motivational.

To this end, the Navy League works closely with the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and US-flag Merchant Marine through a network of over 330 councils in the United States and around the world. The Navy League has 70,000+ active members.

The Navy League supports America's young people through its youth programs, including sponsorship of the US Naval Sea Cadet Corps, the Navy League Scholarship Program, and the Samuel Eliot Morison Essay Contest. Individual councils are also involved in promoting youth-oriented activities in their communities such as NJROTC, MCJROTC, and ROTC units along with other recognized youth programs. Local councils and national headquarters provide over $250,000 scholarships and awards every year.

Navy League councils support active duty military personnel through "adoption" of ships, installations, and units; commissioning ceremonies; award programs; and other recognition programs.

Over the years, the Navy League has compiled an impressive record of accomplishments. Today the Navy League is respected by citizens, community and industrial leaders, and public officials. Navy League programs are welcomed in communities throughout the nation, and members are recognized for their integrity and patriotism.

Navy League Objectives:

* To foster and maintain interest in a strong Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine as integral parts of a sound national defense and vital to the freedom of the United States.
* To serve as a means of educating and informing the American people with regard to the role of sea power in the nuclear age and the problems involved in maintaining strong defenses in that age.
* To improve the understanding and appreciation of those who wear the uniforms of our armed forces and to better the conditions under which they live and serve.
* To provide support and recognition for the Reserve forces in our communities in order that we may continue to have a capable and responsive Reserve.
* To educate and train our youth in the customs and traditions of the Navy, the Marine Corps, the Coast Guard and the Merchant Marine through the means of an active and vigorous Naval Sea Cadet Corps.

Navy League Policies:

* We of the Navy League of the United States stand for a strong America - a nation morally, economically, and internally strong.
* We believe that the security of our nation and of the people of the world demands a well-balanced, integrated, mobile American defense team, of which a strong Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine are indispensable parts.
* We support all Armed Services to the end that each may make its appropriate contribution to the national security.
* We know that in a free nation an informed public is indispensable to national security and, therefore, we will strive to keep the nation alert to the dangers which threaten - both from without and within.
* We favor appropriations for each of the Armed Services, adequate for national security, economically administered.
* We oppose any usurpation of the Congress's constitutional authority over the Armed Services.
* We urge that our country maintain world leadership in scientific research and development.
* We support industrial preparedness, planning, production.
* We support efforts of our government to achieve worldwide peace through international cooperation.
* We advocate a foreign policy which will avoid wars - if possible; if not, win them!

If you concur with these objectives and policies, why wait? Join the Navy League of the United States now.

A veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it. -- Author Unknown
