The only people I ever thought that comprehended what we did in Vietnam, on this site or the HC site was Griz, Andy and beleive it or not James. Check out the www.atav.us site some time .Especialy click on the 8th group patch. Guntrucks and long tough road.etc. I was proud to be in the 8th group.

Default I rode some convoys

Those guys driving the fuel trucks had the roughest job in Vietnam, bar none. I'd say most got no medals, except for a very hard earned Purple Heart. We never got one of them. There was no need for us.

Default And I forgot to say you fred

You know, after 34 years I just recently got in touch with 3 freinds not only from my company but squad. one of them is trying to get his purple heart from a convoy we were in. He would like to get reconition for it now, but back then he was just glad to be alive. Two of us are trying to help him as we were there when it happened. Take it easy fred.

Steve...you forgot me too...you and Griz have my deepest respect for your service in Vietnam...it doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand the danger of both jobs...he's my bestest friend in all the world and I have told him more than once but I will tell you both now...thank you...and welcome home...

Thumbs up STEVE

Don't forget me, my friend. The last 8mos. of my 2nd tour was spent rideing a gun jeep with a M-60 on convoy security, escorting convoys out of Cam Ranh Bay up into the Highlands. I was attached to the 4th Trans. Command. All fuel haulers. I have been in roadside firefights and seen tanker trucks of JP4 lit up by B-40s. Truckdrivers over here ALWAYS had my respect, my friend. Just drove down Mang Yang Pass yesterday in an air conditioned minibus. The ONLY way to travel .

Default little sparrow and frisco

My memory was just a little clouded last night from one too many cokes. I do remember. Frisco you were on a real historic road in the Mang Yang pass yesturday. French Moble 100 was wiped out there during their Indo China war. That was a stretch of road we called ambush alley. I remember seeing parts of trucks and jeeps from prior ambushes on the side of the road as we drove through.
Back in 68 I was going through there between Qui Nhon and Pleiku while James was in the hills with the lrrps. In reading some of the history about it on the atav web site, it sounds like the Mang Yang never was ever secured.

Never got a compliment from someone who didn?t owe me money. Did you ever get in a big card game? When I was holding a queen high straight flush and bumped the pot $40.00 are you the guy who ponied up with a genuine, authentic Rolex watch, that had 3 moving parts?
Thanks for the nice words but I?m not sure why.

Stay healthy,
Honest Andy
PS: Or did you ever play 3 card Monty with a good looking white guy?

Default Road in a convoy

Several times , didn't even give it a thought, I will say this, some of those truck drivers a crazy,
We were going through this curvey area once and the convoy commander told us to open up on the tree line , We did , no one shot back, I think those trucks were doing around 180 or so,
(not really) I don't think I would like being in a truck while being shot at.

You guys earned your pay. Thanks
Ron

I think Frisco mentioned a while back that he thought the truck drivers with the 4th trans were crazy. Now you say some of the ones you saw were. I know a lot of the guys I was with for sure were crazy. [It must have been from inhaling diesel films.]
