Buffalo man gets medals

Buffalo man gets medals for Korean War wounds BUFFALO, N.Y. _ It took more than 50 years for Kenneth Ward to get the medals he earned on a Korean War battlefield. Yesterday at a church in Buffalo, Army officials presented the 75-year-old Ward a Purple Heart, a Combat Infantryman's Badge and a National Defense Service Medal. Ward was serving in the Army when he was wounded in September 1950. He was among a group of soldiers transporting ammunition to the front when their Jeep hit a tank mine and blew up. Ward suffered numerous shrapnel wounds to his legs. The six other soldiers in his group were killed. State Senator Byron Brown of Buffalo helped Ward get his medals from the Army after learning that they had never been issued.
