- Cpl. Robert A. Hendriks, 25, was killed in Afghanistan by a roadside bomb

- His brother Joseph, also a Marine, was given leave to escort his body home

- Sgt. Christopher K.A. Slutman, 43, Sgt. Benjamin S. Hines, 31, were also killed

A Marine has escorted the body of his brother and two other soldiers back to the US after they were killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan.

Staff Sgt. Christopher K.A. Slutman, 43, Sgt. Benjamin S. Hines, 31,and Cpl. Robert A. Hendriks, 25, were killed Monday when a bomb struck their vehicle near Bagram Air Base north of Kabul.

Cpl. Hendriks' brother Joseph Hendriks, who is also in a Marine, was reportedly with the cortege as the soldier's bodies were unloaded on Thursday at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.

Robert Hendriks' aunt, Lorraine Caliendo, told Newsday that Joseph had been given special permission by the military to escort Hendricks' remains back home.
Ms Caliendo described Robert as a 'sweet, kind and loving young man'.

She added that Joseph has just started a tour in Afghanistan but has had to postpone his tour of duty because of Robert's death.

Caliendo said both brothers hoped to become police officers after their military service and called Robert's death a 'horrible, horrible thing'.

In the aftermath of the deadly incident, the Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack which killed the three men who were in Afghanistan with 25th Marine Regiment, a Massachusetts-based Marine Reserve unit.

Slutman was a 15-year veteran of the New York Fire Department. He grew up in Maryland and lived in Delaware and New York.

The fatalities brought to seven the number of U.S. troops killed this year in Afghanistan, underscoring the difficulties in bringing peace to the war-wrecked country even as Washington has stepped up efforts to find a way to end the 17-year conflict.

Relatives of the deceased Marines were invited to witness what the military calls a dignified transfer in which the cases containing the remains are transferred to a vehicle from the aircraft that ferried them to the United States.

Media access to the transfer event is allowed if agreed by the family of the fallen service member, under a policy initiated in March 2009.
