US strengthens diplomatic support for peace talks with Taliban, increasing likelihood of formal negotiations in Afghanistan
By: Alex Barnes - IHS Jane's Country Risk Daily Report - 18 July 2018
RE: http://www.janes.com/article/81831/u...in-afghanistan

Event
On 16 July 2018, General John Nicholson, Commander of the US Forces in Afghanistan, announced that the US was ready to facilitate negotiations with the Taliban. Separately, according to media reports, Afghan officials are considering a second ceasefire with the Taliban over the Eid al-Adha holiday from 21 to 23 August.

US statements have been widely misinterpreted to suggest the US will directly negotiate with the Taliban. In fact, although the US continues to insist the Afghan government must remain the key interlocutor with the Taliban, the recent surge in US diplomatic activity in Kabul and Islamabad, bolstered by the unprecedented Taliban-government ceasefire in June indicates increased willingness ease the path for negotiations.

O Almighty Lord God, who neither slumberest nor sleepest; Protect and assist, we beseech thee, all those who at home or abroad, by land, by sea, or in the air, are serving this country, that they, being armed with thy defence, may be preserved evermore in all perils; and being filled with wisdom and girded with strength, may do their duty to thy honour and glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
