PHoto of 6th Fleet US Navy USS Carney DDG-64 Destroyer: http://uawire.org/Media/Default/_Pro...97657131596319 https://sofiaglobe.com/wp-content/up...USS-Carney.jpg

“The Carney destroyer entered the Black Sea in order to conduct maritime security operations,” the statement reads.

The purpose of the destroyer’s arrival is to interact with allies and partners in the region. The Navy stressed that the Carney’s arrival in the Black Sea demonstrates the unchanged US commitment to security in the region.

Carney belongs to the early “Arleigh Burke-class” destroyer and carries standard weaponry including 96 launchers for various types of missiles such as Tomahawks, Standard and VL-ASCROC missiles. The ship is also equipped with Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System.

The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Carney (DDG 64) entered the Black Sea on August 12 in order to conduct maritime security operations and enhance capability and interoperability with allies and partners in the region, the US Sixth Fleet said.

The ship’s operations in the Black Sea are meant to enhance maritime security and stability, and combined readiness and naval capability with Black Sea allies and partners.

“Carney’s arrival in the Black Sea demonstrates our continued commitment to security and stability in the region. Our time spent here will help us improve interoperability and the sharing of information and experiences with our partner nations,” the vessel’s officer commanding, Commander Tyson Young said.

The Carney entered the Black Sea to demonstrate the US commitment to the collective defence of Nato allies and Black Sea partners, the Sixth Fleet headquarters said. It noted that all Department of Defense efforts in support of Nato allies in eastern Europe fall under Operation Atlantic Resolve.

“The US Navy routinely operates in the Black Sea consistent with the Montreux Convention and international law,” the statement said.

Carney, forward-deployed to Rota, Spain, is on a routine patrol conducting naval operations with allies and partners in the US Sixth Fleet area of operations in order to advance security and stability in the Black Sea region.

The USS Carney’s entry to the Black Sea received negative coverage in the Kremlin-aligned media, which quoted various figures as interpreting the US destroyer’s entry to Black Sea waters as “creating tensions”. The media in Ukraine were largely positive about the ship’s arrival in the Black Sea.
