September 1960 (Year of the Rat [Canh Ty]): There are 545 clashes between South Vietnamese forces and Viet Cong during the month. September 10, 1961 (Year of the Ox [Tan Suu]): General McGarr reports a significant increase in Viet Cong activities and capabilities in the highlands and along the Laos/Cambodian borders, and predicts possible large-scale VC activity at the end of the monsoon season. September 10, 1962 (Year of the Tiger [Nham Dan]) (US Advisory): ARVN forces, supported by U.S. helicopters, kill 40 and capture four Viet Cong in Kien Phong Province, 80 miles west of Saigon. September 10, 1962 (Year of the Tiger [Nham Dan]) (US Advisory): South Vietnamese troops and planes attack the village of Koh Rokar on the Mekong River in Cambodia. September 10, 1965 (Year of the Snake [At Ti]) (US Defense): The beginning of a 30-day period when A Company, 1st Aviation Battalion, based at Ban Me Thuot, will be involved in major operations in all four Corps areas of Vietnam. More than 80% of the Communist infrastructure on Vinh Loc Island will be wiped out during this operation. September 10, 1968 (Year of the Monkey [Mau Than]) (US Counteroffensive Phase V): A Companyy 3 RAR relieves C Companyy 1 RAR on land clearing operations in AO Warburton. September 10, 1968 1968 (Year of the Monkey [Mau Than]) (US Counteroffensive Phase V): A/7/17th Cavalry Scouts receive intense automatic weapons fire from a bunker complex near Duc Lap. September 10, 1968 1968 (Year of the Monkey [Mau Than]) (US Counteroffensive Phase V): Operation Somerset Plain update: A USAF F-100 accidentally strafes troops from the 101st Airborne near FSB Bastogne. Casualties: US 7 KIA, 54 WIA September 10, 1970 (Year of the Dog [Canh Tuat]) (US Counteroffensive Phase VII): ANZAC forces begin Operation Cung Chung 2 Phase 1. Troop deployment isn't affected, but the AO is increased by taking over 2 RAR's former territory, including most of Route 15 east to Route 2. W Company 2 RAR-NZ comes under operational control of 8 RAR and continues to operate to the north of the Nui Thi Vais against the D65 VC sappers. |

On this day in 1966 PFC Alfred Lee Stonehouse was killed by small arms fire somewhere around Tuy Hoa, Phu Yen Province, VN. Lee was a paratrooper in C co, 2/502 PIR, 101st Abn. Div.. He was the 2nd KIA sustained by our company in 3 days. He was killed in a burst of gunfire from a village as we were crossing a rice paddy. He was from NYC, NY, and was 21yrs. old.
