August 3 1958 Nautilus submarine travels under North Pole On August 3, 1958, the U.S. nuclear submarine Nautilus accomplishes the first undersea voyage to the geographic North Pole. The world's first nuclear submarine, the Nautilus dived at Point Barrow, Alaska, and traveled nearly 1,000 miles under the Arctic ice cap to reach the top of the world. Killing Fairness The FCC attempted to ensure that TV and radio broadcasters presented both sides of political issues discussed on their airwaves. But by the 1980s, the landscape changed, and the Fairness Doctrine would soon be no more. We examine what the doctrine did, why it died, and where that leaves us today.
