WHAT: Coast Guard and partner agencies will discuss the importance of boating safety ahead of Hurricane Matthew and the upcoming Columbus Day weekend – one of the busiest recreational boating weekends in South Florida.

WHEN: Wednesday, October 5, 2016, at 1 p.m.

WHERE: Coast Guard Air Station Miami, 14750 NW 44th Ct, Opa-locka, FL 33054.

MIAMI — The Coast Guard, Coast Guard Auxiliary, Biscayne Bay National Park, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Miami-Dade Marine Patrol will hold a hurricane preparedness and Columbus Day weekend boating safety press conference at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Coast Guard Air Station Miami.

All boaters and beachgoers should monitor the progress and strength of the storm through local television, radio and Internet as the hurricane approaches Florida. Boaters can monitor its progress and be apprised of small craft advisories and warnings by monitoring VHF marine radio channel 16.

Adverse weather effects generated by a tropical storm or hurricane can cover an area hundreds of miles wide. Recreational boaters and commercial vessels outside of the direct path of the storm are advised to be aware of weather conditions and to take appropriate precautions to stay safe.
