ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England -- Wales has reported a measles outbreak in the Mid and West area. A total incidence of 808 confirmed cases from 1 November 2012 - 17 April 2013 have occurred. Currently, NO confirmed cases have occurred in the Suffolk County.

Measles is a highly contagious, acute viral illness transmitted by contact with an infected person through coughing and sneezing. After an infected person leaves a location, the virus may remain contagious for up to two hours on surfaces and in the air.

Measles can cause severe health complications, including: pneumonia, encephalitis, and even death.

The symptoms of measles include, but are not limited to: blotchy rash, fever, cough, running nose, conjunctivitis, feeling run down and achy. If these symptoms appear contact your health care provider.

It is recommended to receive the Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine. MMR vaccine is routinely given at 12 months of age, but may be given starting at 6 months of age. You are not fully protected until three weeks after you have received the vaccination. Active Duty members may check their immunization status and their dependents through ASIMS at: https://asims.afms.mil/webapp/MyIMR.aspx

IF UNVACCINATED, LIMITED TRAVEL TO WALES IS ADVISED, PARTICULARLY IF YOU HAVE INFANTS UNDER THE AGE OF ONE.
