I noticed I put 21st, and changed it, It was the 22nd we left. I remember thinking it's 11/22.
It was a hell of a couple days. The two companies of 173rd were cut in half by NVA and the lead company had a 500lb bomb dropped on their position. I believe it was the Morning of the 22nd that the lead company made it to the top, The NVA had pulled out in the middle of the night, we helped clean up some and left. I’m not sure what day the 173rd left the area, it was after some more 173rd guys marched in to help. The sad thing was when we were back at Dak To and LT told us to go to the parade ground that the 173rd was doing something for their guys. We got there and a bunch of 173rd guys were in formation standing in front of a row of Boots, M-16s and helmets. They played taps, saluted and lowered the flag and carried it off, then raised another and lowered it to half staff. Didn't here any joking or kidding at all for quite awhile. Ron |

Dak To
Ron didn't get to Dak To until my second tour. Was with C 1/22 4th ID then. Mar 69-70. Got to Dak To in June or July 69 if I remember correctly. Spent 3 weeks there, that was long enough. I don't think the NVA ever left Dak To. It must have been haven for them.

On Nov 19th 2 companies of the 2/503 C&D, and 2 platoons of A company started up that hill. The rest of A company stayed at the bottom to set up LZ. The first up the hill made contact just as they passed the first of two ridges. 4/503 arrived the next day and the day after that 1/12 of the 4th arrived. The 2/503 and 4/503 went up the west side and 1/12 4th went up the south side.
This was all part of operation McAruther, hills all around that area were being attacked and held by 173rd & 4th and some ARVN unit. Ron |
