Trump reportedly told the military to evacuate the families of military service members living in South Korea before the Winter Olympics

Personal Note: - Before reading the report below - I wonder if Trump is having 2nd thoughts on this so called up coming peace talks. Again he could be just posturing or he could be raising the hammer a bit to NK?

- Earlier this year, President Donald Trump reportedly told former national security adviser H.R. McMaster to prepare for a possible evacuation of the 8,000 military dependents living in South Korea.

- The plan was never carried out, but if it had been, it would have raised alarms for US allies and North Korea.

- Defense Secretary James Mattis and White House chief of staff John Kelly reportedly persuaded Trump not to pull military dependents out, and instead, prohibit service members stationed in South Korea from bringing their family members with them in the future.

- Republican lawmakers called for similar plans in 2017.

US President Donald Trump indicated he was considering pulling the families of US service members living in South Korea out of the region, a move that would have raised alarms for US allies and North Korea, according to a CNN report published Tuesday.

Trump had reportedly told his then-national security adviser, H.R. McMaster, to prepare evacuation plans for around 8,000 military dependents, weeks before the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, several current and former administrations officials told CNN.

McMaster ordered National Security Council staffers to draft a memorandum outlining the evacuation, which then made its way to White House chief of staff John Kelly.

One senior administration official described Trump's request as a direct order: "It wasn't, 'I'm thinking about it,'" the official said. "We saw it as a done deal."

Eventually, Defense Secretary James Mattis and Kelly persuaded Trump not to evacuate military dependents from the Korean Peninsula, and instead, prohibit service members stationed in South Korea from bringing their family members with them in the future. Around 28,500 US troops are currently stationed in South Korea.

But neither of the orders were given, and the Winter Olympics concluded without unexpected provocations from North Korea.

It was unclear what led Trump to believe an evacuation of South Korea was necessary at that time. But had the order been carried out, it would have sent shockwaves throughout the global community.

At the time, White House officials were reportedly considering options for a "bloody nose" strike against North Korea — an assertion that some officials called patently false. Though the exact scope of such a strike remains unclear, the prevailing theory is that of a limited engagement intended to send a message to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un

An immediate evacuation would likely have indicated to allies and the North Korean regime that the US was preparing for a conflict, which would have further escalated the tensions between the two countries.

Several Republican lawmakers expressed their support for such a plan in 2017.

Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and an ardent North Korea hawk, floated the idea on a televised talk show in December: "It's crazy to send spouses and children to South Korea, given the provocation of North Korea," Graham said on CBS's "Face the Nation" at the time

"South Korea should be an unaccompanied tour," Graham continued. ''So, I want them to stop sending dependents, and I think it's now time to start moving American dependents out of South Korea."

Top North Korean defector who said Kim Jong Un's 'days are numbered' predicts the leader will never give up nukes, will open his borders to tourism
By: David Choi - 5-14-18
RE: http://www.businessinsider.com/north...n-nukes-2018-5

- A former top North Korean official believes North Korea will not agree to a US request for a "complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization."

- Thae Yong Ho, North Korea's former deputy ambassador to the UK, said North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will not loosen his grip on nuclear weapons.

- The defector said the regime might be looking into tourism projects near coastal areas and eventually seek joint economic projects with South Korea.

An ex-North Korean official suggested that his former country may have a different definition of the term that has been circulating around foreign policy circles ahead of the upcoming summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un: denuclearization.

Thae Yong Ho, North Korea's former deputy ambassador to the UK, said he did not believe Kim would agree to a US request of a "complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization" due to likelihood that it would "strike at the core of North Korea's power structure."

Besides making surprising advances in its missile capabilities in 2017, North Korea's leadership has focused on peddling its significance to its own society and culture: the regime revised its constitution in 2012 to tout its nuclear ambitions, and despite saying it no longer needs to conduct nuclear tests, its nuclear capabilities still remain an essential part of Kim's domestic and international clout.

"Kim Jong Un said during a party meeting on April 20 that [nuclear weapons] are a treasured sword for protecting peace," Thae said to reporters on Monday, according to South Korea's Yonhap News Agency. "He also said that they are the strongest assurance that guarantees the most respected and happiest life on earth."

"They are, in other words, a sword and a shield for eternal prosperity, prosperity and happiness for generations to come... He will never give them up," Thae continued.

Thae also noted that North Korea was likely to open its borders to tourism projects near its coast. Thae predicts it would then eventually seek joint economic projects with South Korea, such as the Kaesong Industrial Complex that used to employ North Korean civilians and provided a revenue stream for the regime.

Thae defected from North Korea with his family in 2016. As one of the highest ranking North Korean defectors, Thae frequently rails against Kim and is considered an ardent hawk on North Korea's conciliatory overtures, even going as far as saying "Kim Jong Un's days are numbered."

The US and its allies have focused on the subject of denuclearization following North Korea's nuclear and missile tests in 2017, a fact the regime knows all too well and will use to leverage its position accordingly. After it promised to dismantle a nuclear test site, satellite imagery indicated that the process was "well underway," according to North Korea analysis group 38 North.

Trump and Kim are scheduled to meet in Singapore on June 12. The meeting would be the first time a sitting US president and a North Korean leader would meet, and comes after Kim held a summit with South Korean President Moon Jae-in in April.

North Korea Threatens to Cancel Meeting Between Trump and Kim Jong Un
By: KELCEY CAULDER | MAY 16, 2018 | 7:18 AM
RE: https://ijr.com/2018/05/1095531-nort...ng-threatened/

North Korea on Tuesday warned the United States that a planned meeting between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un is in jeopardy because of joint U.S.-South Korean military exercises, USA Today reported.

It also cancelled its scheduled meeting with South Korea over the military drills, which North Korea believed to be carried out in preparation for an invasion, according to the South Korean news agency Yonhap.

"We have no choice but to suspend the North-South high-level talks planned for the 16th amid this menacing situation where an indiscriminate ruckus to invade the North and a confrontational mayhem are occurring in the South,” KCNA, North Korea’s state news agency said, according to Yonhap.

“The United States will also have to undertake careful deliberations about the fate of the planned North Korea-U.S. summit in light of this provocative military ruckus jointly conducted with the South Korean authorities,” it continued.

U.S. officials said they have not been contacted by North Korea regarding the military drills or about cancelling the summit between Trump and Kim.

“We will continue to go ahead and plan the meeting between President Trump and Kim Jong Un,” State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said.

She also noted that Kim had “said previously that he understands the need and the utility” of the joint exercises.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders reiterated that the U.S. would continue to plan for the meeting, but said the administration will “look at what North Korea has said independently” as it moves forward.

The Pentagon issued a statement after the possible cancellation was reported, stating that the nature of the joint exercises “has been clear for many decades and has not changed.”

"The purpose of the training is to enhance the ROK-U.S. Alliance's ability to defend the ROK and enhance interoperability and readiness,” Pentagon spokesman Col. Rob Manning said.

Last month, Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in swore to end the decades-long Korean War and work toward their “common goal” of denuclearizing the Korean peninsula. It is unclear how the drills will have affected this pledge.

President Trump is set to meet with Kim in Singapore on June 12.

Personal note: Much of what is being said prior to any meetings is normally jocular positioning. This type of rhetoric will continue until there is a meeting or not. This type of threatening posturing has been seen throughout all conflicts around the world. Will it come to past they will have a sit down or will pressure's applied by both sides end up in a another stalemate? Kim is a kid with a lot of power in his country. He learned this from his Father and Grand-Father both of which he no doubt killed getting him his current position. I don't understand how one man can stir a country into such control and his followers to obey? Such cruelty to their own people? This type of regime is unhealthy and very damaging to the world. - But this is just my thoughts.
