DHS Moves to Promote Global Peace, Stability, and Security by Enhancing Women’s Leadership Around the World Through Whole-of-Government Strategy

06-11-2020 08:41 AM

WASHINGTON – Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Chad F. Wolf issued the following statement today regarding the DHS Implementation Plan for the United States Strategy on Women, Peace, and Security to address problems faced by women and girls in conflict and disaster-affected areas around the world:

“Our Department is grateful to President Donald J. Trump for creating an articulated strategy to promote the role of women in preventing conflict and securing peace. This important strategy—the first of its kind—will have far-reaching effects on the success and empowerment of women as it not only prioritizes women’s participation in conflict recovery, but in civilian and economic life as well.”

“DHS has been working diligently with our agency partners, the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of State, and the U.S. Agency for International Development, with the support of the White House National Security Council, to finalize our DHS Implementation Plan. I am hopeful that DHS will be able to identify further opportunities for future agreements with partner nations to bolster our shared security through empowering women to take a larger leadership role in law enforcement. I look forward to seeing the results of this initiative as we work together with our partners to protect our borders, end human trafficking, and disrupt transnational criminals.”

As part of the DHS implementation plan, which is being led by the Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, the Department will be working to identify additional training opportunities for more women from partner nations to come to DHS to learn the essential skills of law enforcement leadership, when such training is permitted by law. DHS helps negotiate key international agreements ranging from border security to narcotics interdiction on behalf of the U.S., among other critical issues.
