Himself Shot, 74-Year-Old Bill Badger Helped Pin Down Tucson Suspect; "I Don't Give a [Expletive]," Another Man Told Loughner


(CBS) Shot and bleeding from the head, a retired Army colonel helped subdue the gunman who opened fire at a congresswoman's meet-and-greet in a Tucson grocery store Saturday.

Seventy-four-year-old Bill Badger was in a line of people waiting to greet Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords when the gunman - identified at 22-year-old Jared Loughner began the rampage that killed six people and wounded 19, including the congresswoman, who remains in critical condition.

"There was just a series of shots and I heard the shots and my first reaction was a firecracker, they were extremely loud," Badger told CBS affiliate KOLD in Tucson. "He'd already shot Representative Gabrielle Giffords and was shooting the people sitting in the chairs, coming right towards where I was standing. Everybody was hitting the sidewalk and I turned to my left and started to drop and I felt the stinging in the back of my head."

That sting was a bullet wound. But Badger pressed on.

"The shooting stopped and I raised up and didn't realize it, but he was right beside me. Right in front of me. And I got to my feet and one of the individuals who was there to see her was on the other side of the walkway, you know, right where he was walking and that individual took a folding chair, folded it and hit him on the back of the head and he moved his head forward so much of the blunt of it came right on the shoulders of his back and when they did that his left arm came out and it was my opportunity," Badger told KOLD.

"I grabbed his left arm and started to twist it back and grabbed him on the shoulder with my right hand another individual grabbed his right hand and together we pushed on him and he went right down on the sidewalk."

Badger and the other man pinned the suspect to the ground until police arrived.

"Anytime he would even start to move, I would tighten my grip on his throat, and the other guy would put more pressure on his neck to hold him down," Badger said. "And he'd holler, 'Oh, oh, you're hurting me! Oh, oh,' - like that. And that guy said, 'I don't give a [expletive].'"

Badger was treated at a nearby hospital and expects a full recovery.

After hearing the tale, Badger's wife Sallie said it didn't surprise her at all.

"The only thing that would have surprised me is that if he would not have done this," she told KOLD. "Bill is a man of action."

It is so predictable by the leftists to immediately impugn the conservatives for any act that is damaging, from murders to floods, famines, droughts and other conditions. And invariably, they are wrong, as they are wrong on so many other things.

I recall when JFK was shot. At the time, I was attending Trinity University in San Antonio. One of my professors, a typical yellow-dog Democrat, was railing about those dastardly Conservatives in Dallas, who were to blame for Kennedy's death. When I reminded himthat the man arrested and charged with killing Kennedy was a Soviet-sympathizer, the professor, his jowls quivering in rage, approached me, and hollered, "It doesn't matter, it doesn't matter, the consveratives killed him!" So much for reason, sanity, logic and common sense.

I just wish we could mourn them as Americans. I think the real lesson from all this is people have to step up. When the college threw this piece of shit out of school for threatening violence, they should have reported him to the authorities. There was a system in Arizona to deal with it and it wasn't used. Tennessee has a similar system.

If White House Was Surprised by Applause at Tucson Pep Rally… Why Did They Ask For It On Jumbotron?

On Thursday, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said that they were surprised by the applause at the memorial pep rally on Wednesday for the victims of the Tucson shootings.

I will say that I read the speech several times and thought that there wouldn’t be a lot of applause if any. I think many of us thought that. But I think there was a celebration, again, of the lives of those who had been impacted. Not just at that grocery store but throughout the country. And I think that, if that is part of the healing process, then that’s a good thing.

Oh really?

Then why was it printed on the Jumbotron?

Death threat at ABC-TV Town Hall event Saturday

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) -The meeting room at St. Odilia's Catholic Church on the city's northwest side was packed with local dignitaries, witnesses to the mass shooting Jan. 8, some of the witnesses to the shootings and the first responders to the scene for a taping of an ABC-TV special, a town hall event, at 11 a.m. Saturday. Host of the program, This Week, is Christianne Amanpour. The show will air at 7 a.m. Sunday on KGUN9-TV.

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head at close range last Saturday by a lone gunman. She survived. A total of six people were killed. Nineteen were shot.

Jared Loughner, 22, a former Pima Community College student, is the sole suspect in the shootings. He is in FBI custody.

Toward the end of the town hall meeting Saturday morning, one of the shooting victims, J. Eric Fuller, took exception to comments by two of the speakers: Ariz. state Rep. Terri Proud, a Dist. 26 Republican, and Tucson Tea Party spokesman Trent Humphries.

According to sheriff's deputies at the scene, Fuller took a photo of Humphries and said, "You're Dead."

Deputies immediately escorted Fuller from the room.

Pima County Sheriff's spokesman Jason Ogan said later Saturday that Fuller has been charged with threats and intimidation and he also will be charged with disorderly conduct.

Among the dignitaries at the town hall taping were Mayor Bob Walkup, U.S. Rep. Raul Grijalva and former Congressman Jim Kolbe.

ABC News dubbed the town hall, "After the Tragedy: An American Conversation Continued."

A press released stated that the event will restart the conversation that Giffords began. "Among those who will join the Town Hall: family members of victims, citizens who took heroic action and community leaders," the press release stated.

A KGUN9 News crew was at the town hall. KGUN9 will air a report on KGUN9 News Saturday at 5 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Saturday's 10 p.m. newscast will be a one hour 9 On Your Side special report entitled, "One Week Later."

One of the wounded in the Tucson, Ariz., shooting that left Rep. Gabrielle Giffords critically injured is blaming Sarah Palin, House Speaker John Boehner, Fox TV host Glenn Beck and former Nevada GOP Senate candidate Sharron Angle for the tragedy. “It looks like Palin, Beck, Sharron Angle and the rest got their first target,” Eric Fuller said in an interview with Democracy NOW. “Their wish for Second Amendment activism has been fulfilled — senseless hatred leading to murder, lunatic fringe anarchism, subscribed to by John Boehner, mainstream rebels with vengeance for all — even 9-year-old girls,” he added, referring to the death of Christina Taylor Green. Fuller, a 63-year-old veteran, had campaigned for Giffords during her reelection and was at the supermarket for her Congress on Your Corner event. “I would put Sarah Palin in first place there. I think, really, she should be incarcerated for treason for advocating assassinating public officials,” Fuller said in an interview with Media Matters. “That map I saw that she published on the Internet had crosshairs on it and one of them was meant for Gabrielle Giffords.” He added, “This woman is a spotless, purest, sweetest lamb in the world, gunned down … The only word I could think of is outraged.” Fuller was shot in the knee and the back in the tragedy that left six people dead and 14 wounded. “I was in shock, and I just wandered out into the parking lot,” Fuller recalled in the Democracy NOW interview. “And a woman was pushing a cart full of groceries out there. And I said to her, ‘I’ve been shot.’ And she just looked at me like I was crazy.” Earlier this week, in an interview with CBS News, Fuller didn’t go as far as to point fingers. Instead, he called the accused shooter, Jared Loughner, a “madman.” “I hadn’t ever had any kind of trauma experience at that level before,” he told CBS. “And I didn’t know — I didn’t quite know how to react. I felt like we were in for more, and possibly to be given a coup de grace by this madman that was so vigorously exercising his Second Amendment rights.”
