I guess it's just that even with a weapon you never feel safe to the point that you are as alert as walking point in Vietnam. That is about a good a definition of PTSD as I have ever heard. I despise PTSD and what it is doing to me to the point that I will sometimes do exactly the opposite of what it wants me to do. I choose not to submit. As I have said before, I can never be rid of it but when I die you can damn well be sure I will die with my hands around its throat. I would love to have a gun. I dream about having a gun. But I know where that desire comes from and I refuse to satisfy it. PTSD wanted me to be a drunk and so I did. But when I realized what was going on I went to an inpatient treatment substance abuse program. Those things have a 5% maybe success rate. That's me. F**k PTSD. Look at it this way, I know I am going to be miserable any way any way I go but by damn I will choose the misery.

Brice,

I see that also as the greatest threat.

Somebody said, "The greatest enemy of guns is rust and politicians."

The chance of becoming a victim as we have discussed in this thread is small.

But if it happens I'll be as prepared as possible.

I dont have any great arsenal. I have a few collectibles.

I have the firearms that I use in competition.

I have the firearms that are for self preservation.

When I drive, I wear a seat belt. That increases my chances of survival.

I keep my vaccinations updated. That increases my chances of survival.

I try to be aware of who is around me and what they are doing. That increases my chances of survival.

To me, all of the above are just reasonable precautions..

We've had four home invasions in my county so far this year. In one case the unarmed citizen opened the door. He died.
The other unarmed citizen had his door forced in. He had time, but he had nothing to fight back with. He was critically beaten.

In the two cases where the homeowners were armed, the citizens survived and the intruders paid the price.

With all the logic I can muster, I can see only one way to evaluate this.

Default I own four guns:

I own four guns, I have been around guns since I was born. I shoot very well, both handguns, rifles, and shotguns. That being said; I don't carry firearms with me unless I'm hunting. I never keep a loaded gun in the house or near ammunition. However, I have very good friends who always carry a firearm. I am a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment and its literal interpretation. Once we loose a right, soon all our rights will disappear as those elected officials feel it necessary.

Amen to that Keith. It's all about what it takes to make someone feel safe. Me? Nothing will. But if weapons are what it takes, more power to them. Just keep them away from the toddlers.

Doc Fred,

Not only kept away, but LOCKED UP.

Children are inquisitive. They WILL FIND guns and they will play with them.

It's an inescapable fact.

The homeowner with young children will be compromised by the time it takes to get the firearm in service, but there is no other way.

Colt, I believe, is experimenting with "smart" firearms that can be fired only by a designated person.

That would be a boon to homeowners and police officers.

It stands until otherwise altered. The best offence is a defense and you learn that in life real quick!
