Default Basic

I was just wondering if anyone here took their basic training at
Ft.Gordon,Ga? I for some reason remember my unit E-4-2 located
near the Stockade and a mock training area called "MP City"!
I have to say that Ft.Gordon beat Ft.Polk ,But, thats not hard to do!!
Regards,masher

Masher, took my 6 months MOS training at the Ft.Gordon T.S.S.E. technical school. Shipped out from there to Korea in 58.

The base had just recently been changed from Camp Gordon to Fort Gordon. I still don't know what the difference between a camp and a fort is. ...Probably some logistical thing ?

...remember being barred from a number of saloons in Augusta.

Default Augusta

I had nearly forgotten about Augusta!! I remember walking around there with no hair and wearing civvies with low quarters
thinking "heck, no one will ever know I'm a G.I."!
But, it was still 10 times better than Ft.Polk the anus of the
world!!!!

My worst experience was at Ft Lewis, Wash. Mustered out there in 62 and had to wait an extra week 'cause somebody lost some of my files.

Default Basic ...

...was in Texas between the first, and second week of June 77...

...Hot...........................How hot was it???

...It was so hot, the pavement splashed when you ran PT...

...they called it "red flag, or blue flag for the presiding temp at present, forget which one was for which, I think blue was allowed outside, but no PT, and red was for meant that anyone that went outside never was seen again...
...blue went off, and red went up at 105 degrees I think...

... prior ROTC by passed me by testing out in 8 days, and a few weeks of "casual" was spent making picnic tables, the sgt asked if anyone knew anything about carpentry? , and carpentry either meant inside, or death on a roof someplace, but being the adventurer I am oped to vol-n-teer, and it ended up under this nice shady tree with a circular saw, and a tape measure, pencil and a big pile of lumber that I turned into a bunch of tables in 2 weeks...
...I just kept makin' them tables lookin' out a all the guys doing lawn work with those metal toe guards, and googles on with clouds of dust around them from those gas weed wackers, or push movers sweatin thier asses off sayin' to my self,.....

... self keep makin' tables cause the more tables that keep popping up makes it look like I'm reeeeeaaaallll busy, and gettin' lots done, and I don't want to be out there with the rest of the non table makers.......

...I was f*#kin' hot under the shady tree, still see those heat tracks rising everytime I think of basic...

...more guys had heat rashes the first week, some so bad that the infirmry would tape a broom handle to each ankle between their legs, and you'd see um coming two blocks away, they looked like an upside Y, and you'd have to leave the sidewalk just to let them by... they were the dorks that didn't know enough to pull those OVERSIZED FATIGUES up high in the crotch as not to RUB, they usually washed out quick on a medical...

...best part of basic was thinking we were back at our dorm, me, and another by pass attempt-ee, were on our way to another portion of the test, and had to change after Pt, and the course, so we run back to what we think was our dorm, and "identify our selves to the dormguard, and "we're not on the list" he tells us, and we give him a bunch of shi+ , until we amke him believe there's an error on the list, or sumtin', and he opens the door, and let's us in, we ran down to what we thought was our bunks, and Icould not get my locker open, and start taking a closer look, LIKE this ain't my laundry bag, and this don't look like MY blanket, (you know the kind, the ones that we're left over from the war of 1812, green, 600 different shades of green, and wouldn't hold a hospital corner if you pinned it), anyway, wasn't my locker, or my laundry bag, or my bunk in the 8th position, ***hint*** it wasn't our dorm(light bulb turns on, and mouth opens spewing loudly) "HEY WE'RE IN THE WRONG DORM", and I hear, yea, I know, and we start makin tracks for the door, and we're just about through it, and we hear a BOOMING VOICE coming from GOD'S office saying """DDDOOOORRRRRMMMMM GGGUUUUAAAAARRRRDDDDDDDDDDDDDD, AM I TO UNDERSTAND THAT MMMYYYYY DORM HAS HAD AN UNAUTHORIZED ENTRY" as were running down from the 3rd floor stairwell...
...I know we didn't make that guy's day...

...basic was basic......

Thumbs up Great

Really enjoyed your post seatjerker!! You guys bring back
things to my mind that I had forgotten about. My basic was pretty normal I guess for that time period. We all figured that Nam was our destiny and so we just sort of accepted our fate.
The D.I.s just kept saying how they only had 8 short weeks
to turn a bunch of pathetic excuses for human beings into a
"Lean Mean American Fighting Machine"! Coast guard enlistment
where are you i would think, but, I knew it was too late for that.
But, after 8 weeks and picking up a half million cigarette butts
I graduated and was sent to the tropical paradice of Ft.Polk
La!
Those were some times.
