Russia closes NATO missions as ties plunge to new low

Moscow (AFP)

Russia said Monday it was suspending its mission to NATO and closing the alliance's offices in Moscow, as relations with the Western military bloc plunged to new depths.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced the moves after NATO expelled several members of Moscow's delegation to the alliance for alleged spying.

"Following certain measures taken by NATO, the basic conditions for common work no longer exist," Lavrov told reporters in Moscow.

He said Moscow was suspending the work of its official mission to NATO in Brussels, including its military representative, from around November 1.

Russia was also shutting down the alliance's liaison mission in the Belgian embassy in Moscow, set up in 2002, and the NATO information office set up in 2001 to improve understanding between NATO and Russia.

"NATO has already greatly reduced its contacts with our mission," Lavrov said, adding that the alliance is "not interested in dialogue and work as equals".

"We see no reason to pretend that any change is possible in the foreseeable future."

Lavrov said that in case of urgent matters NATO could liaise via the Russian ambassador in Belgium.

NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu said the alliance had noted Lavrov's comments but had not received "official communication on the issues he raised."

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas described the announcement as "more than regrettable" and said it would prolong "icy relations" between Russia and NATO.

"We are ready for dialogue, but must realise that this is no longer the case with Moscow," Maas told journalists in Luxembourg.

- 'Malign activities' -

The moves cut off years of efforts to improve ties between Russia and NATO that followed the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union.

They come after NATO earlier this month stripped eight members of Russia's mission to the alliance of their accreditation, with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg calling them "undeclared Russian intelligence officers".

"We have seen an increase in Russian malign activities, at least in Europe and therefore we need to act," Stoltenberg said at the time, describing the relationship between NATO and Russia as "at its lowest point since the end of the Cold War".

Russia had an observer mission to NATO as part of a two-decade-old NATO-Russia Council meant to promote cooperation in common security areas.

The Russian mission has been downsized before, when seven of its members were ejected after the 2018 Novichok poisoning of a Russian former double agent, Sergei Skripal, and his daughter in Britain.

Meetings of a NATO-Russia council have not been held since 2019 against the backdrop of the heightened tensions.

Russia's relationship with the West has been on a downward spiral since Moscow's 2014 annexation of Crimea from Ukraine and support for pro-Russian separatists in the country's east.

Western nations have imposed a series of sanctions in recent years over Ukraine, alleged election interference, cyberattacks and the poisoning of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny.

Moscow in turn has accused the West of interfering in its elections and of supporting anti-Kremlin forces in countries like Ukraine and Georgia that Russia considers part of its traditional sphere of influence.

NATO defence ministers, including Austin, will be in Brussels on Thursday and Friday for a series of meetings.

Note: This seems like a prelude to other's withdrawing from NATO.
Lot's of hard feelings amongst the NATO Leaders of late. This must
be repaired in order to maintain a line of communications. I suspect
North Korea and China will follow suit. If they have not already done
so.

Arrow NATO responded to Russia

NATO responded to Russia
By: Tanjug - b96 Net News - 10-18-21
Re: https://www.b92.net/eng/news/world.p...2014&yyyy=2021

NATO announced it took note of the comments of the Russian Foreign Affairs Minister Sergey Lavrov on severing communications with the North Atlantic Alliance.

However, the Brussels adds that they have not received an official letter on the closure of the Russian diplomatic mission at the NATO headquarters.

"We have taken note of Lavrov's comments in front of the press, but so far we have not received anything official on the issue he raised," a NATO spokesman said, Reuters reports.

Earlier in the day, Lavrov said he would suspend NATO activities from next month in response to the North Atlantic Alliance expelling eight Russians from the Russian mission in Brussels.

Lavrov added that Russian personnel at the NATO mission in Moscow would lose their accreditations from November 1, and that the Alliance would be able to communicate with Russia through its embassy in Brussels if necessary.

& he adder;

Lavrov said that Moscow, as of November 1, in response to the revocation of accreditations for eight associates of the Russian Mission to the Alliance, is suspending the work of its permanent mission to NATO, as well as the main military representative.

In addition, as of November 1, Russia is suspending the work of the NATO communication military mission in Russia, and the accreditations of the representatives of the Alliance are being revoked.

Just to reiterate, NATO expelled eight members of the Russian mission to the Alliance in early October, stating that they worked secretly as intelligence agents. NATO then reduced the number of positions for which Russia can accredit its representatives to the Alliance, from twenty to ten.

No clear explanation has been given for the decision, which takes effect at the end of the month. Earlier this month, Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenber called for relations with Russia to be maintained in order to avoid a new Cold War. Relations between the Alliance and Russia have become increasingly strained since Moscow annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea in 2014.

The two sides are also arguing over the development of Russia's nuclear missile program, the intrusion of Russian planes into the airspace of NATO members and their overflights of Allied ships.

Reply from Russia:

"I was expecting a different result"
By: Russia - Osovo Online - 10-18-21
Re: https://www.b92.net/eng/news/politic...&nav_id=112012

Prime Minister of Kosovo and the leader of the Self-Determination, Albin Kurti, stated that he expected a different result of the local elections held on Sunday.

He said that in the coming days, he would analyze what exactly happened, reports Koha. "As the leader of Self-Determination Movement, I am pleased to see so many candidates in the second round, as well as a large number of councilors throughout Kosovo. I am ready to cooperate with every municipality. This is a great victory for democracy”, Kurti said.

He added that the elections were free, democratic and fair, without any incidents.

"All complaints will be resolved by the competent bodies. As prime minister, I am very proud that we had European friends who observed our democracy, which can serve as an example for countries within the region and beyond," Kurti said.

As a reminder, Self-Determination did not conquer any municipality independently, i.e. it goes to the second round in 12 municipalities.

I suspect this will only be temporary but you never know
It's happen in the past and will again in future.
