Who was Maury?
Who was Maury?
Published March 1 2006 Q: Who is Lake Maury (in The Mariners' Museum Park in Newport News) named after? A: The lake is named after Matthew Fontaine Maury, who is considered to be the "father of oceanography." Maury was born near Fredericksburg in 1806. In 1855, he published "The Physical Geography of the Sea," which is now credited as "the first textbook of modern oceanography." During the Civil War, Maury served as commander in the Confederate States Navy. One of his responsibilities was harbor defense, which led him to mine the James River. Lake Maury is a man-made lake that covers 167 acres, part of the 550-acre Mariners' Museum Park.
