Survey, Diving and Salvage Operations

The Navy has numerous diving and salvage teams in the affected areas working with the USCG, the Army Corps of Engineers and the Department of Marine Resources. They are being assisted by French and Canadian divers and in some cases local Parish officials. These teams are conducting contaminated water dives in order to determine the status of sunken vessels, prepare sunken vessels for removal, locate dangers to navigation and remove obstructions from channels to restore them to pre-storm depths. Their work is helping to facilitate the arrival of Naval, industrial and commercial traffic into port.

That's a GREAT Navy effort for Katrina!

It gives me some peace of mind here on the NW Florida Gulf Coast knowing that such help will be available if ever needed.

We have a very small Coast Guard unit near me in Destin, Florida.

Even as small as they are, they sent some folks over in two small craft to help out.

These CG guys and gals are always helping out our emergency responders with water-related emergencies, especially with swimmers and boats during the summertime.

I make it a point to go by the Coast Guard Station every Christmas and drop off some tasty snacks.

That is a great gesture 82 Rigger, during the Day on Christmas Eve I go the recruiting stations and leave a dozen donughts for the recruiters. It might not be much, but at least we show them our appreciation for their service.
