Default Sponsor for DAV? Is one needed?

I have a question for the wise and knowing here at PF. In order to join the DAV is a sponsor needed? It appears on the application but states "If Applicate." I need this explained. Thank you for you time and effort in this matter.
Seat Jerker could probably help the most with this question.
Again Thanks, Sparrow Hawk

Hey Shipmate, yeah that helps. It's a bit easier to join on line then it is to send the paperwork in. I was using the DAV New York link, the national is a bit better. They still ask for a sponsor but it appears to be a yes or no question.
Thanks for the help.
